More studies need to be done, and this one was paid by Edwards, but good news nonetheless for tissue valvers. This is consistent with my research heading into my surgery almost 1 year ago! http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2011/04/03/health/AP-US-MED-Heart-Valves.html?_r=1&ref=aponline

    Tissue Valve Durability data

Hi all - is there a resource one can go to for data regarding the durability of various types of tissue valves, other than the manufacturers' own sites? The assumption here is that I have chosen tissue over mechanical, and would now like to choose among tissue valves based on durability...

    Explaining OHS to children

I wrote a post on this subject a few months ago looking for advice when my cardio told me it was time to have the surgery, my surgery is now in a couple of weeks' time. After getting some advice from my daughter's (4 years old) teacher about what to say, I've now told her and it went incredibly...

    Percutaneious replacement of aortic valves

Has anyone come across any recent papers on the status of the development of percutaneous replacement of aortic valves - i.e., replacing tissue valves through a catheter? I've read one study but it appears to be used currently for people who are extremely ill and it's a life saving measure when...

AVR date set for April 27th!

After 5 years in the "waiting room", my date is set for April 27th. Still wavering on valve choice, but other than that I am remarkably calm about the whole thing. I'm sure the panic will come last minute!! Thanks to everyone for the advice over the years.

    Degrees opened - mech valves

Hi, I recall seeing someone provide this information in the past but I can't find it with the retooled site. I've seen people mention the importance of how far a mech valve will open up - e.g., 90 degrees, 70 degrees etc., and its importance to things just as platelet count. Does anyone know...

    Reops with mechanical valve

Hi, I am leaning towards going with a mechanical valve (I'm in early 40s) because I do not want to have a re-operation and I've been told that the mechanical valve and Dacron graft will certainly outlive me. My question - is there any information or data out there about the rate and causes of...

    Maze procedure combined with AVR

Hi, My cardio has advised that my surgeon should perform a Maze procedure at the same time as my AVR in order to deal with my persistent afib. I don't dispute the need for the procedure, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this done, are there any additional questions or considerations I...

Time for operation is here, questions to ask in advance

Hi, After 5 years in the "waiting room", I learned today that I have to move forward with the valve replacement surgery. Cardio estimates that I should have the surgery within the next 6 months to be on the safe side. I have read some of the very useful preparation lists and posts in this...

Potential for future bleeding event on Coumadin

Hi, Are there some old posts or has anyone done any research on the potential for future internal bleeding events, not caused by lifestyle or injury? My cardio has said that the probability of a bleeding event increases by 1% per year, and it is cumulative - so after 40 years (in my 40s now)...
