    Incision Site/ Type

I can't speak for anything but the "zipper". I had little pain in the incision area and did not need anything but an occasional Tylenol. You WILL WANT your heart pillow for that cough or sneeze close by. My major discomfort was not being able to lie down to sleep for two weeks. I slept in the...

New member having surgery January 10th- need some good advice

Hi Jason! I am coming up on my 1 yr. anniversary from OHS and your fears are just what I experienced. The breathing tube was a big fear for me, but until I read your post I hadn't thought about it since the RT said "cough on 3"! As others have said the tubes and wires are no big deal and were...

Name and Rate Your Beta Blocker(s)

I got started on Metoprolol right after my surgery (1/7/10) @ 50mg x2. I seemed to be having some high BP issues and my Cardio suggested I might like Bystolic if cost was not a concern (non-generic). I am going to start that next week. I have not had a lot of the symptoms other posters have had...

    Learning the Insurance Company dance....

Called my insurance company today and inquired about home testing. Apparently this is something new to them:confused2: They asked me for a "HIC/PIC code for the machine to see if it were covered. I haven't got a clue what that is. I gave them the PT INR website for info and they said they...

    Black and Blues on Warfarin?

Kvntoday: I got the "I am surprized you're on aspirin still" from an MD-Internist friend recently. So that will be a leading question to the Cardio guy next week! That and "Howz about me doing my own home INR testing":eek2: Bob

    Newbie question

LLJ, As others have said, take it slow and patient with getting your INR adjusted. My INR took about two months post surgery to stabilize. A big piece of that is your increase in activity and appetite as you heal. As you progress in your rehab (hope you are doing the Cardio Rehab) your numbers...

    Black and Blues on Warfarin?

Hey Yvonne, I am on the same tract as you seem to be (Surgery January, warfarin, asprin). I get some bruising from light impacts that never showed up before my AVR. I play racquetball and get some pretty good lookin' "donuts" from ball hits. I have a check up coming next week and I am going to...

    Achey arms

Hi Andy, I looked up Sotalol (http://www.medicinenet.com/sotalol-oral/article.htm) and a lot of the symptoms are the same for Amiodarone which I took for a couple of months following my AVR. I had some serious muscle pain in my shoulder blades until I got a reduction in the Amio. The Cardio...

    New Kiwi zipper club member

GLAD YOU ARE HERE! You will find a wealth of information for just about anything you are dealing with! Somebody here has "been there, done that!" Dealing with medication complications can be tough, but again SOMEBODY on this forum has probably dealt with it. I had A-Fib issues for a couple...

A little advice, please? (WARNING - kinda gross)

Colored "discharge" from the nose is often a sign of infection. So by all means mention this to your Dr. on Monday (no need to bring samples!!) Bob

    What I did this week.

Well my Cardiac Rehab upped me to 5.5 mets (what ever that is) and that got me huffing pretty good on the treadmill, EFX, and some kind of arms only device. We had a break in our typically rainy weather and I took a bike ride of several miles including some walking type hills; legs were fine but...

Is this too much after 6 weeks

Don't know what type of cardiac rehab you have over there "across the pond". The one I am attending here in the colonies pushes me pretty good. Also included in the program is an education component; weekly classes for an hour for eight weeks. The education piece covers a wide range of topics...

    Coumadin/Amio/COq10 interactions

I am kinda moving this discussion over from Heart Talk. I was interested in starting some COq10 supplements since I am taking Crestor(statin). At my last ACT Clinic visit they requested I not start this until they had my INR stabilized from dropping my 200mg daily dose of Amiodarone. I...

Is this too much after 6 weeks

I get a similar response from my Cardiac Rehab folks who follow the Perceived Rate of Exertion chart. I see that at lots of health clubs as well. They tell me to keep my exertion between 11 (fairly easy) and 14 (pretty difficult) when walking on the treadmill with varying rates of incline. I...

    3rd day and I'm home!!!!!!!!!

Well you just hit your first "speed bump"! Did they give you a coughing pillow? If not get, something small you can clutch when you cough/sneeze and keep it handy! Even a small rolled up towel works well. 6 hours sleep 4 days out is great! Keep on keepin on!!

    Lifetime medications ???

Jeanie, Interesting you mention the COQ10. I am wanting to get on this but at my last ACT Clinic visit they preferred I kick the Amio for a couple of weeks before I add something new to confound my INR with the Coumadin. The Amio really plays with your dose and INR levels.

    Lifetime medications ???

Hey Robert, I seem to be in a similar situation out of the chute as you. I had AVR on Jan 7, 2010 and was put on Amiodarone and Metoprol. I just quit the Amio which was to control early A-fib. Have to see how this works out! The other meds I take are 81mg aspirin, Crestor, and of course my...

Back home after successful robotic mitral valve repair

Night sweats are pretty common after Heart Surgery. I had a couple of nights in the hospital where I was totally drenched. They even had to come in and change the bed linen. Sleeping will get easier as the days pass, but do enjoy those afternoon naps! Welcome to the other side and keep posting...
