    Live AVR Webcast

For those who may be interested, I recently came across a site called or-live.com and have been watching live surgical webcasts online. I just noticed that they're airing an aortic valve replacement October 20. Here's the link with more information about the procedure and the software required...

    I Forgot!

Hey everyone :p Last night I realized my valve replacement anniversary had gone by (two years on Apr. 24) and I completely forgot about it! I can remember the countdown before surgery, 6 weeks until, 4 weeks until, 6 days, 2 days and then afterwards, one week since, one month, one year...

    Switching Cardiologists

I had an echo July 17 and then a follow-up appointment with my cardiologist August 6. He didn't even know I'd had an echo and couldn't find the results. He said he'd have his staff book a follow-up appt. Yesterday, I call his office because I want to get back to work and I'd like to find out...

    Throat Tightness/Angina?

Since being diagnosed with CHF this past December, I would occasionally have a sensation that I can only describe as a tightness or a constriction of my throat. I hadn't had it since April (I had my AVR April 24). My surgeon thought it was angina, however, it doesn't always occur with exertion...

    Shoulder pain?

My left shoulder has really been aching for the past two days. It's a gnawing pain. I'm pretty tough when it comes to pain and since the day after surgery (surgery was Apr.24) have only needed extra strength tylenol, and the past week I haven't needed anything for pain, but now I've broken...

    I made it!

Hey, I'm back and one week post-op :D I went in last Thursday morning (Apr. 24) for an early morning surgery. As I expected, they couldn't get a vein for an IV. They ended up putting a lock in my neck so that they could at least knock me out! The anesthetist was a riot, as were all the OR...

    Bypass with Valve Replacement?

I met with my surgeon yesterday and he told me that it appears that one of my arteries was also damaged by the radiation (or possibly chemotherapy) that damaged my aortic valve. He said the angiogram will give them a clearer picture, but he will probably do a bypass using an artery from my left...

    Have a surgery date

Hi, Someone from the Heart Institute just called to give me appointments for my pre-surgery consult and my surgery date. Even though I knew it was coming, I'm terrified. It's all real now. The surgery will be April 24th. I don't think I'll be painting my house this spring as I had planned...

    Travel and Coumadin?

I'm not sure what type of valve I'll get, but if I get a mechanical valve, I'm curious how it will affect vacationing. Can you go for two week periods without testing (generally we go away for 2 week periods twice a year)? The only people I know on coumadin are tested weekly. Thanks

    Ottawa Area?

Hi again! I've been reading through your posts and haven't seen many people from Canada. Are there any posters here from the Ottawa area? I'll be having my surgery at The Ottawa Heart Institute and I'm curious about the care there. Thanks!

    New Here

I just wanted to say a quick hello and a "thank-you" to whoever set up this site. I was diagnosed with moderate aortic stenosis Jan 2002. An ecg in December '02 showed that the stenosis hadn't changed. I had a dobutamine ecg the end of January '03 to rule out pseudo aortic stenosis as the...
