Hi Everyone.....Last night we (Sarah, Thomas and myself) went off to bed. After about 10 minutes Sarah came over to me and said something ''strange'' had just happened her.

She said that she had turned out the light and had been lying down a couple of minutes when something caught her eye up at the top of her window and to the right of her bed. It was a dark slightly oval shape. She tried not to look at it but it moved and suddenly there was a rectangular white shape coming down from it. It moved down toward her and she began to feel weird. She felt ''heavy'' down one side of her body, including her face. She got up, turned on the light and looked in the mirror because her face felt strange. Her mouth was hanging down in a weird way. She had a feeling of not being altogether ''present'' in her mind.

She is not sure exactly how many seconds or minutes this all lasted for. But when she was looking in the mirror she suddenly realised this was not right (as though her mind cleared) and came over to my room.

It was nothing to do with low sugar because they had dinner about 6pm, and I made pancakes for both of them about 9pm (their treat while watching ''desperate housewives''.

She was calm, but slightly ''off'' when we were talking about what happened. She shed a few tears as we talked about it. We were trying to ''explain it away'' really.

Today in the morning daylight, it all seems like some weird story, but it was very real and Sarah is not a nervous or panicky person. She slept in my bed with me, and hasnt done that for years (she is 18 years old).

*Does anyone have any explaination as to what this could have been.

Did you notice anything different about her face at the time, or still today, or was it just a temporary thing? It does sound like the symptoms of a stroke, or TIA. Is she on the pill? I know that can cause clots.

I'd take her to the doctor for a complete physical.

I agree with the others -- my DW had a stroke some years ago, and a TIA a few months ago. She had strange symptoms like that. I would get it checked out right away. It could be something else, of course, but best to check it out to prevent a major event.

Thank you all for your input.

*Lisa, Sarah doesnt take the contraceptive pill. She doesnt have a boyfriend. She is such a great daughter. If shes not in school, shes in work or at home....or shopping of course.
She is focusing on her studies and work this year. Neither does she drink, smoke or take drugs. I AM TRULY BLESSED with my youngest 2 kids....,my oldest son is another story.

Sarah looked completely normal to me last night, apart from being a little dazed...and today she is fine, but tired. We had another chat a little while ago and she said that the reason she looked into the mirror is that she couldnt actually close her mouth.

I have an appointment with the doctor for her for tomorrow, but if ANYTHING happens today or tonight I will bring her straight to A&E.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

This reminds me when I was about 20 and experienced facial paralysis (sp) on one side of my face.

Is your daughter able to close her mouth this morning? Is she able to press her lips together and "puff" up her checks without air escaping? These were two things I was unable to do and was put on steroids for about 10 days.

In any case, do get it checked out and let us know.

There is something called Bell's palsy which affects facial nerves and is caused by some sort of nerve inflammation. You can Google it and there is a good description on Wikipedia.

No matter what, she should be seen by a doctor very soon.

Whenever I get 'visual disturbances' or anything that 'might be' signs of a TIA or stroke, I chew a full (325mg) Aspirin with my Doctor's concurrence.

You may want to ask your / her doctor about doing the same if/when she experiences 'strange' effects.

I mentioned it because my 18-year-old daughter was put on the pill recently to control her cycle. She was having very heavy periods every 2 weeks, and was anemic. Symptoms such as your daughter's are one of the things she was told to watch out for.

Even good girls are sometimes on the pill!

Jacqui,

I hate to say the word "stroke" to you too but I will say it because that does resemble a "mini-stroke" to me. Do not hesitate to take your daughter to the doctor ASAP because it could be life-threatening.

I friend of mine's sister, just recently, got up one morning, was fixing breakfast for her husband & son & a few minutes later she collaspsed on the kitchen floor without any prior symptoms whatsoever. They took her to the hospital where they told the husband that she had suffered a mini stroke.

Well, she recovered after about a week in the hospital. The day they were releasing her to go home, as she was getting dressed in the hospital, she suffered the BIG one & is now paralyzed on the right side, confined to a wheelchair & unable to speak or care for herself.

So, like I said, this is a sign that something is NOT right Jacqui so take her in for a check-up. Good luck dear! :)

Jacqui,
Haven't personally dealt with any of what you said happen to your daughter at 18 yrs of age.
Sounds as if this was not normal, I would do what everybody has advised and take her in to see the dr. I can only imagine how you feel. I would take her in ASAP. My daugter is 22 and I know I would take her in right away if that had happen to her. My prayers are with you and your daughter. Keep us update on how she is doing.

Hi again....just wanted to let you know how Sarah got on at the doctors app. She (the doc) took Sarah's b/p and looked into the back of her eyes and said that what happened to Sarah was most likely an ''occular migrane''.

She had to take a preventative tablet for migrane headaches when she was 9/10years old and has been having A LOT of very bad headaches lately. Also I get occular migrane (with zig-zag lights) so doc said it is genetic, and said jokingly....''you can blame your Mum for that''....even though I smiled, my heart sank...I thought ''GREAT, Iv given Thomas heart problems and Sarah migrane headaches...8-/

I was reading about migrane headaches on i.net and they said that people who suffer from them are more likely to have a stroke....NOT GOOD NEWS.

*Lisa, just so you know, I was NOT implying that girls who take the contraceptive pill are NOT GOOD. That did not, and would not even enter my mind for a second.

**THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR REPLIES AND CONCERN. x

My first occular migraine was at around the age 20 and it was near the time that I started taking "the pill".
I never experienced headaches before that.
What is kind of strange is that my daughter started headaches quite young, around age 10,
and I'm very sure she was not on the pill then....(grin).
Jacqui, I hope that Sarah is writing down the dates of any headaches and anything that happened during that time period which could have triggered them. Sometimes hormone activity and stress are contributors.
Good Luck!

I am trying to catch up in VR and just found this. I hope that your daughter is right as rain again, but you are now going to keep a good eye on her. Wishing her health.

Hi,

I hope you shall not waste energy on worrying unnecessarily about migraines causing a stroke...cncentrate and be happy that it was not a stroke.I hear there are some diets and medication to control migraines if she gets lots of them!! my nephew's wife suffers a lot and it helped her when she sustained from MSG and cheeses and dairy products. Check with the doctor if this may apply on Sarah.

Good luck.:)

Me too,Bina. I was wondering, did anyone have an aura with their migraines,
such as the one Jacqui has described(the motion/light at window)?
Auras can be visual, auditory, or olfactory, but I never had any with my
migraines...does anyone else?

Jacqui-I am curious because this seems like an unusual element, and
a possible clue to what it is, if it continues.
Wishing you the best-Dina

Hi Jacqui,
When I was in my 20's I used to get numbness down one side totally unable to move my arm or leg, my speech was slurred and my mouth was open in a weird one sided way, the very first time I had one of these I was panicked and called an ambulance, by the time the ambulance arrived all symptoms had passed, I still went to Emergency worried that it was a stroke after many tests the Doctors could not find much wrong with me.
I was referred to a Neurologist after many more tests was told it was migraine I never had a headache with these episodes they came and went in about 3 minutes, I had about 4 in total over about a 5 year period and haven't had one for quite sometime but did start to see flashy lights and sometimes went completely blind in one eye (since my Ross Procedure all this has totally gone).
I hope Sarah is ok and doesn't have anymore of these episodes they are a very strange experience...

Migraines are very weird. They can come in many different forms. My daughter was just diagnosed with vestibular migraines. She loses her hearing, gets very dizzy and has to go to bed until it passes. She had all kinds of neurological workups, and that was the final diagnosis.

She doesn't get any headaches for the most part with them.

One of the many doctors she went to said that it has been discovered that migraines are tiny seizures.

Anyway, she is slowly getting better with some medication, and learning to cope with stress in her life which had been enormous, and way beyond her control. I think knowing exactly what the heck they are makes it easier to cope with them.

I hope your daughter doesn't have any more problems.

THANK YOU ALL for your very interesting and helpful comments.

*Bina, the doctor told Sarah to keep a diary of her headaches and if they become too frequent or debilitating she will give her some medication to prevent them...(course she had to go and mention one of the side effects is WEIGHTGAIN, so Sarah isnt too keen on that), but we will see how things go.

*Eva, I promise you I am not wasting any time worrying about a stroke.....too many other things to worry about. But like Ann said, I am keeping a good eye on her (just in case).

*Nancy, what your daughter is going through sounds very scary...(all these type of symptoms are pretty darn scary really) and its hard to watch your child going through it. I lay awake ALL NIGHT, the night it happened, worrying in case it was a stroke and something terrible might happen to her and I wouldnt be able to help her if I fell asleep (she was in my bed). But one thing I did get from this experience is WHAT SARAH AND THOMAS ARE GOING THROUGH WORRYING ABOUT ME. Thomas doesnt talk about it much (typical male, but I know he worries) but Sarah often cries in case something should happen to me, especially the last few months, she has passed comments about my health. Its become almost impossible to hide things from them now, because we can be just chatting and I get so short of breath that they are both commenting on it. Whereas before I could just stay sitting or something to hide symptoms......I have an appointment with my cardio on 25th (9 days and counting) so I just hope and pray that he does something ANYTHING for me.

Anyway.....THANK YOU *ALL* AGAIN.
