This is the first time I have needed any new meds since I started taking coumadin so I am new to the frustration of the lack of knowledge out there. I thought I had a knowledgable pharmacist but today i asked her what I could take for a yeast infection while i'm on coumadin and she told me anything as long as it's not by mouth. I should have informed her that miconazole is dangerous but I was late to pick up my daughter and didn't feel like teaching a coumadin lesson. I am new to all of this and only know what I have read from you guys and I have done some research online but after today I feel like I need to know everything about warfarin because I will probably run into a lot of uninformed people over my life and if I ever need to go to the hospital for an emergency I may be miss treated. By the way, I also asked the walmart pharmacist if she knew what I could use and she at least looked it up on her computer and told me not to use anything until I consult with my doctor. That was a better answer but why is it hard to find out what i can use? Are yeast infections uncommon with warfarin users? I mean most of us have to premed for dental appts.

Why is there such a lack of information? It's not like warfarin is a new or hardly ever used drug.

Anyways, can anyone tell me if there is anything safe to take for a yeast infection? I can't find any negative info about tioconazole. Is that a safe one and should I check my inr in a couple days if I do use it just to be safe?
I called my coumadin nurse and am waiting on her to call me back but I bet you guys have a better answer for me. I will let you know what she says though.

Well this is all could find, granted its from the Monistat site, but tioconazola has the same stuff. Does this help? I doubt it.

Does this interaction with Warfarin occur with other yeast infection products?
The drug interaction may occur with Fluconazole, and is described in the prescribing information. This interaction with Warfarin is included on all miconazole nitrate products, including private label brands.

As you are discovering, WE are our First Line of Defense when it comes to determining interactions between New Medications and Coumadin.

There are several On-Line Drug Information Websites and many have a means of comparing drugs for interactions.

You can simply do a Google Search for one of the drugs to find many of the sites such as
Drugs.com
DrugInfoNet.com
RxList.com
WebMD.com/drugs
HealthSquare.com
MayoClinic.com
MedicineNet.com

(Can you tell that I just happened to do this recently? :)

And YES, most anti-fungal drugs (used for treating Yeast Infections) have a Strong Interaction with Coumadin. Sorry about that. My best advice would be to contact your Coumadin Manager and hope that s/he is familiar with the interaction and can guide you in your treatment. Basically, you will probably need to Test Frequently and adjust your Coumadin Dose appropriately (starting AND stopping the antifungal treatment drug).

Al is right! my coumadin nurse called back and said to use whatever I know will work and test my INR in a couple days. She did say to use a shorter duration like a 1 or 3 day treatment if possible hoping thed shorter duration will have less effect. She has had patient who weren't effected at all and some were and had to have there dosage adjusted.

Almost all drugs have side effects even if you are not on coumadin. Just listen to the TV commercials describing the possible side effects of the drugs.

Anything that ends azole is going to raise your INR very fast!!!

The best site for checking interactions that I've found is

http://www.drugdigest.org/wps/porta...y9zdGVwL2luZGV4/#7_DHFHCNL218J630276FL8L614T3

Antifungal agents
Major
Delayed
Good
• Fluconazole (Diflucan), ketoconazole (Nizoral) and miconazole (Monistat) decrease warfarin metabolism
• Monitor INR when azole antifungals are added or withdrawn

Miconazole (Monistat) raised my INR to 8.0. Could have been higher. Home testing unit stops there. I can use Terconazole with no raise in my INR. Figured this out years ago. Have had to resort to Terconazole 0.4 many times over. No issues. Good luck!
