I just thought I would update ya'll on trying to get financial aid (since I don't have health insurance) so I can afford to get my aortic root and ascending aorta replaced and possibly (but hopefully not) have my aortic valve replaced.

Here is the update:

Well that's it for now. I've filled out all the paperwork, released my records, and have been pretty much just waiting for something to happen (trying to get aid through my county's vocational rehab services agency since my condition doesn't qualify for SS disability benefits), and I have been doing some odd jobs to pay for my golf addiction as I feel my overall health slowly slip backwards from where it was a year or two ago. Sometimes it gets pretty hard not to let the self pity creep in...thank God for golf...it is my sanctuary!

:)

Brian I an sorry to hear you are still waiting. My only thoughts would be have you contacted the larryking foundation? (i don't have that link but they help people who need surgery but dn't have insurance, he is the guy from CNN) and I know Deborah hospital in NJ is very good especially with CHD adults with CHD and their mission statement is to give everyone the same care wether they have insurANCE OR NOT, THE ONLY THING i DON'T (OOPS) know is if it is just for people living in NJ and surrounding states or everyone in the US, but it could be worth checking out http://www.deborah.org/ I hope your 2011 new years update tells us how great your life is since your surgery and recovery

On my machine most of your message was blank. In any event, good luck with your efforts to get surgery. I think this firms up my fears about retiring to NC. It appears it is next to impossible to get health care in NC without insurance. Or, did you cover that in the missing parts of your message?

Please keep us updated about your progress toward OHS!

Yes, I can't see the body of the message either.

Jim

I'm guessing the blank part was Bryan's humor, meaning there was no progress getting financial aid?

There is a high risk pool in North Carolina that I believe requires them to provide you with insurance, regardless of pre-existing conditions. You'd have to pay for it, but insurance should definitely be cheaper than OHS!

Lyn had a good link... here it is: http://www.nchirp.org/

I'm glad you thought it was humor too, I thought that, then started thinking I was wrong and it was missing the message
the high risk pool is a good idea to look into
also I got the Larry King foundation link, I don't know how it works, if it is only certain hospials ect http://www.lkcf.org/site/PageServer
but their mission statement is
Our MissionThe mission of the Larry King Cardiac Foundation is to provide funding for life saving cardiac procedures for individuals who, due to limited means and no insurance, would be otherwise unable to receive life saving treatment.

Thanks for the links everyone, I'll definitely check them out. And yes the big blank part is where the update would go if I had one. It was an attempt at humor, albeit a weak one.

:D
