I know this is a heart forum but the last couple of days have been hard ones for me and just wanted to talk with some friends. Our almost 6 year old yellow Lab, Abby started to limp on Tuesday night out of the blue. She had limped two or three other times over the last 4 months but only for a day or so and after overexercising. We chalked it up to overdoing it as she is somewhat of a couch potato. When I checked her leg and paw on Tues. evening she appeared to have a second nail growing under her regular nail. I made an appointment with the vet on Wednesday morning and didn't feel Abby since I felt they would need to sedate her to remove this second nail. Within thirty minutes of leaving her at the vet, the vet called and wanted to do x-rays and a biopsy. It appears Abby has bone cancer. It's in her little toe. They amputated her toe and a nearby lymph node that was swollen. The lymph node contains atypical cells but we won't know what kind or the results of the biopsy on her toe until late next week. I realize that if this is Osteosarcoma then things are really bad. I've been crying off and on since Wednesday. Abby has battled Chronic Active Hepatitis and has overcome that only for this to happen. She's just so young. Anyway, I seem to cope so much better with my own health problems and don't get nearly this upset, but when it comes to my pet, it's a different story. Hope you don't mind me sharing all this. LINDA

Linda, that is so sad. I will say some prayers for your dear dog. She is young to have so many problems.

(((((hug)))))

Linda:

I'll be praying for Abby.

I wrote in a post to Norma yesterday that even though this is a heart forum website, we all have a heart for animals -- and those of our friends here, too.

Keep us updated about her.

Abby is in my prayers. Our pets are special and give us love and care that is just so effortless.

Linda,

Believe me, I understand your hurt. I am still trying to wokk through the passing of our dog in Dec. We adopted another dog in Jan. and she has had a couple of really, really close calls lately. So much so that we may nick name her Marley Jr.

You and Abby will be in my prayers.

Linda, you know that we are a caring bunch.....and there is quite a passion for Labradors around here too.
I still miss my girl every day, and it's been almost 6 months since she passed away.
Give Abby lots of hugs and kisses, that's what she will understand best.
(fortunately it sounds like your vet is a good one)

I too will pray for Abby. Two weeks ago one of my sons had to have their faithful golden retriever put to sleep. It was with many tears we all said good-bye. He was around before my son got married and they just had their 12th anniversary. Dakota had breathing problems that had progressed beyond what could be successfully treated. It was real sad.

It is so hard on us when our pets are suffering. I hope you get good news on Abby and all can be taken care of. I will certainly keep her in my thoughts and prayers. I have a 10 yo Jack Russell. Cracker Jack is the best and smartest dog we have ever had. I can tell she is slowing down and hate to think of losing her one day. So far she has been in good shape, but the puppy is gone. It takes along time for JR to settle out of puppyhood.

I am an animal lover and an owner of a 5 y/o golden retriever who I treat like my child. They can do wonderful things in the veterinary world for animal healthcare so I wish you the best. When our golden needed surgery he went to an orthopedic specialist, it is very common these days to have highly specialized veterinarians. I am sending you warm thoughts.

There is a speciality vet around here that does chemo and other special services for dogs, and other animals too.

I can't imagine how expensive this is, but thought I should mention it.

I so know how you feel. I had to have my sweet blue healer "Lady" put to sleep in February. She had Cushings. She was only nine but she went downhill rather fast. I cried for days. My husband just doesn't understand, here I volunteer in ICU, I belong to "Hand to Hand" a group that sits with individuals that don't have anyone to be with them and they are dying and I make it just fine, but let my precious animals die and I fall apart. He said it just doesn't make sense! I love animals of any kind, big or small. Linda you and Abby will be in my prayers. Hugs are coming your way! !

Thank you all for your prayers and support. We still haven't heard about the biopsy. Abby is doing great since the amputation. Back to her old normal self. Our vet does the chemo in their office but it is so expensive...thousands of dollars. We would consider it but from everything I've read about Osteosarcoma, there is only a 50% chance that it would give Abby another year. Abby's liver is also comprimised from Chronic Active Hepatitis (although she's been doing great with it, off all meds). Abby is our only pet and she is a child to Steve and me. Being empty nesters with kids and grandkids living out of state, it's easy to really spoil your furry babies. One of my sons did say something that has helped immensely. He said, "Mom, Abby doesn't know she has cancer, so why treat her like she does." This is so true. Animals do pick up on our moods and feelings so I'm treating Abby like she is perfectly healthy, only spoiling her a lot more (if that's possible).:) Thanks for keeping us in your prayers. LINDA

Linda,

Just want you to know that I feel your pain & I pray that the biopsy comes back negative for your Abby.

I am headed to the stores again so that I can start cooking my Bridgette (diabetic) her & Petrie's own treats. She is responding well to the insulin & it has dropped dramatically but I still get stressed when it's time to give her the injections. But I've got hope that she'll be around a bit longer & believe me, I will do my best on my part to make that happen.

Sending prayers your way!

Linda,

So sorry for Abby...I shall pray for both of you. I had cats when I was a chid, and I still smile from my heart when I remember them, and now since I startd feeling better after surgery, I am planning to have a cute doggy, but one of those that do not shed! any ideas?!

they have such a special place in our hearts, that we are always in pain along with them. they are so helpless and depend upon their human parents to care for them and make everythng ok. sometimes we just can't, so we help them suffer and hope it helps some. my heartfelt feelings go out to you - we all know what you are going through. God bless your baby.

Eva,

I highly suggest you consider adopting a dog or any animal from a shelter or rescue group. I think these animals know they have made if they are given another chance. You can find a variety of these groups by going to Petfinders.com. I found our current dog through that web site.

When you find the right dog, I don't think it wlll really matter to you if it sheds or not. We found Pongo at our local Humane Society. We had her for 12 and a half years until she died this past Dec. Pongo did not shed (Sealyham Terrier mix).

In early Jan, we adopted a dog from the Southern Illiniois Pet Society. She is also a mutt but does shed. However, her sweet personality more than makes up for the shedding :). Let us know how it works out.

Karl
