I am new to this site. Had my surgery a week ago Thursday. I'll post more about me later. I experienced some really intense post-op dreams/Nightmares. Have any of you had a similar experiance?

I have had a few lesser surgeries, and have had anesthesia "flash back" dreams too. They lasted about a month, very strange.

One time, the day after surgery, the young anesthesiologist came in to discuss the surgery with me, asking how I did with his anesthesia and asked me if I had had any dreams while under-- I thought that was peculiar, and wondered just what I might have said while on the table :)

One time when Joe had to have some surgery which was not too difficult, he came out of the surgical suite "higher than a kite" laughing and promising me anything I wanted!

Those guys have potent potions available to them.

Oh Yea! I still have strange dreams, at first they were like action packed dreams like 007! It was wild! I have dreamed about the strangest things. But it does get better the longer you go! Sleeping pills seemed to make it worst for me.

Welcome to the family... I'm proud of ya for even falling asleep long enough to dream but I'm sorry they are strange.

Strange, I missed out on these vivid dreams. If we're talking about the surgery I had nothing there. I remember being put under for a second op to drain the fluid around my heart and when I woke up it felt like seconds later! And after my OHS, as well as the draining I didn't really experience any dreams at all! And now that I'm out I haven't noticed anything unusual

Welcome to the site.
While doing research for my first s/f novel (which i am still re-writing) I learned how to initiate lucid dreams (where the dreamer is conscious that they are dreaming and, in most cases, can control the dream). After my first St Jude AVR in '96, I ceased being able to 'go lucid', possibly due to the constant 'click' of the valve. I did, however, have some horrific dreams starring my psycho ex-fiancee'. These stopped, eventually and my were replaced by the usual mix of dreams and short subjects.
When that valve was replaced by a tissue valve, the click went away and I was again able to have lucid dreams. These shared the tableau with some nightmares.
With valve #3 being a mechanical, I expected to lose the lucids again, but the clicking is infrequent and I've been fortunate to have had 4 or 5 so far. I did have a wierd dream this morning, but it could have been due to something I ate last night.

I hope your dreams settle down soon. Don't be a stranger. This is a great group of folks.

I thought I had a dream my first night home. I decided that I was going to try and lay down in the bed, to see if I could sleep there laying flat. I lasted almost 2 hrs.

I'm not sure what happened. I thought I was dreaming, but I opened my eyes like I did whenever someone at the hospital came it to poke and prod me, and I thought I saw a ghost or someone standing over me.

It startled me, my heart was racing. I layed there to mentally calm myself, and convinced myself that it was a dream. Then slept in the lazyboy the rest of the night. I'm not sure if it was a dream, or my mind playing tricks on me.

yep ive had a bunch- i thought it was anesthesia but i think they go away after a short while.

Welcome to the Forum, Bbarnarad, and welcome to this other side of the mountain!

I recall very strange dreams, but luckily for me they were not nightmares, but very very strange...out of this world! :)

They will go away in a short time.

I don't recall any dreams I've had while under anaesthesia, but I'm nearly certain that I did. and just don't remember them. Once, while coming around after a colonoscopy, my first words were "Penny Marshall".

My first couple of nights home, I would dream that I was forgetting to breathe and wake up anxious and unable to go back to sleep. After the third or fourth night they went away.

Since then, nothing exceptional.

bbarnard,

Welcome to the site. Yes, I had some pretty fun dreams, too. From the subject-matter of about six of these dreams I have laid the foundation for several fiction stories, three of these being science fiction. The most interesting dreams occurred within about 5 days of the OHS. None of these were nightmares, thank God. From then on, the dreams gradually reduced in intensity and interesting content to the point I seldom try to recall them anymore.

Roger from Peoria, as for lucid dreaming, I could do that on occasion, but found that it frequently interfered with the natural flow of the dream, and often I woke up. I usually would fly away from the scenes in the dream in attempt to reach outer space or some other fantastical destination instead of continuing with the subject. My subconscious apparently didn't like that very much--hence the waking up part. Lately I haven't tried to do it. I would have liked to have explored lucid dreaming more, but life's been too intense recently for that. Lots of heart-stopping drama (12/12/07) :D amongst other things.

I had no dreams in the early days post OHS. (In fact, I often have very vivid dreams while "well" but had none while "sick")

I have heard of halucinations in the early post OHS period, however. One person saw mice around her room and sang "three blind mice". Another saw a jungle growing around her room. It's the drugs I presume!:D

After having my son through caeserean section, I refused to take sleeping pills after the first couple of days. (In the olden days, women with caesereans stayed in the hospital for around a week). The first night without sleeping pills, I had a technicolor nghtmare that I can remember to this day.

Joe had hallucinations about kitties playing in his room, one was calico, the other striped. He wanted me to catch them so he could pet them.

He also had hallucinations about spilling his pills on the floor and wanting me to pick them up.

It's common for a while.
