Beta Blockers

Beta Blockers

Suddenly stopping beta blockers unless on a very low dose risks a heart attack, they always should be reduced in a titrated manner under a cardio's supervision.
I was on carvedilol (coreg) then toprol 97mg daily both in conjunction with ACE inhibitors, and I can say it had no effect on my "performance".
Carvedilol caused a permanent headache, even after 3 months, if I was awake I had a headache so I asked the cardio to change me to something else (toprol), this fixed the headache problem.
Both Beta blockers I took made me feel as Wise says sluggish all the time, like a permanent hang over without the fun of the drinks before hand.
I was pleased 1 year post surgery with the cardio's approval I stopped the beta blocker, I don't feel hungover any more. I am still on an ACE inhibitor however this causes me no side effects.

Just so you guys know, I went to the University of Michigan's premiere hypertension specialist and he set up my dosing regimen, so what I did in the past wasn't something I did unilaterally or without prudence and awareness of what i was doing.

Before I saw the HTN specialist I was taking 100mg Tenormin and 10mg vasotec. My new regimen under his care was: 50mg Tenormin, 120mg Verapamil, 10mg vasotec. He never recommended any titration for the beta blocker, probably because I was starting a calcium channel blocker instead. I didn't feel any discomfort like I normally do when I skip a dose of Tenormin and it was a very smooth transition. Constipation was horrible from the calcium channel blockers though so I resumed my normal dose for a while.

I went to another doctor when I was young about my relevant concerns regarding beta blockers. I told him I wanted to cut out the beta blockers completely, so he said "OK,we'll just double your dose of vasotec and I'll see you in two weeks for a BP check." I didn't want to double my dose either, but eventually I used this inference to set up my own regimen I'm using right now of 15mg vasotec and 50mg tenormin. Yes, I did that myself, but it works and I know my doctor or cardiologist would've let me do it because I was actually a little hypotensive. I stepped down from 100mg tenormin to 75 for a week and upped my Vasotec when i reached 50mg of Tenormin to 15mg. I monitored my blood pressure and heart rate closely (daily, AM & PM) and I found that my heart rate actually dropped a little and my blood pressure did increase slightly.

I'm not suggesting you discontinue a beta blocker or any other med on your own, but rather that there is options available for you if you're hating life on the beta blockers. They can tweak the dose, change the brand of med, change the type of med, all sorts of stuff. In the end you might need to be on a beta blocker still, but it's totally worth a visit to your doc's office to see if there's something a little inventive you can do to alleviate the side effects - especially if they're bad.

i can confirm the duff man's postings. spoke to my doctor and got approval to
drop beta blocker and double ace-i. girlfriend is yodeling again. oh yeah, and
i cut 1-1/2 minutes off my 2-mile time. still too tired to continue after 2 miles,
but i get there faster. after 2 miles, 155 bpm whereas before would be 135. no
change to resting heart rate. another oh yeah, she can now yodel 2-3 times
as often as before.

update on no beta-blocker usage. other problems that have disappeared or lessened
since dropping bb:

was having nasty bi-polar-ish mood swings, lack of patience, very irritable.
not as much now, must be residual.

sleeping much better. i also cut out the two liters of soda per day (but not the two
pots of coffee) which could be the culprit on this one.

the regularly-irregular heartbeat is rare.

distance vision has improved a bit, and haven't had any grey mists recently.

running pace has improved, although no increase in endurance.

slight ringing in my ears (from the yodeling).
