Hello everyone
This spring on March 16, 2014, a group of heart patient runners and friends will meet in Cincinnati once again for the annual Mercy Health Heart Mini, co-sponsored by the American Heart Association...
I’m curious about post-op performance of mitral valve replacement/repair patients. Anybody here really feel like they are performing as they did prior to the onset of their valve problems? Or experienced significant improvement over their pre-op performance? My doc is really pleased with my...

Hi Folks
I drink a lot of coffee with no apparent adverse effect on my heart. I'm curious to know doctor's recommendations, consumption habits & experience of others, e.g., triggering of a-fib, etc.
"I say just give in to the lust!"*
That's exactly the reply I got from another VR.com member (who shall remain unidentified) when I confessed my struggle with desire for a new ride via private message.
I fought it off earlier this year, and then once I got into high-volume training, decided...
Yesterday was my 5 year anniversary for MV repair. Today was my annual cardio visit with stress test and echo.
Cardio's feedback:
* Good enough stress test
* Good heart dimensions
* Good lipids
* Good valve
* Good luck at Ironman
I have had no symptoms - but it's always a relief to hear...
I did an oly tri this morning. My swim was off about 90 seconds due to navigational errors, I think. T1 seemed to take a hundred years. I decided I was not setting any PRs today, but I felt good on the bike, so I just decided go for a really good bike split and pay for it later on the run...
What a great community this is! I was reminiscing back to its humble roots:
This forum must surely be the world's foremost site for anecdotal information about the combined topics of sport and valve disease. The quanitity and quality of informational and moral support provided is terrific...

Russell was scheduled to run the "City to Surf" this weekend - it's a huge event - almost 24,000 runners last year!
How did you fare on the 12K, Russell?
Laura was doing a duathlon that included a 3K on sand. Hope you managed to complete that, Laura - please tell us about it.
It was a fantastic day! I got up at 3:45 am to start choking down as much oatmeal and skim milk as I could handle, then went off to the bike corral to get my tires topped off, load up the fluid bottles and stuff the feedbag w/ pita bread.
I wasn't sure how to manage the swim. I got into...

Three years ago I vowed I would do the Lake Placid Ironman in summer '05. Seemed like an eternity away then...but it's rapidly approaching now.
I've been sticking to a race-day-minus-36-weeks training plan. Except for Christmas week and the week when I did my impulse marathon, I've been able...
Okay, she's not the heart patient. BUT, I was proud as can be last Sunday when she completed Ironman Wisconsin. 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run.
She continues to be my inspiration and my big fan (even tho she can kick my butt) and my supporter.
4 years ago I did my first short...
Upcoming heart test...literally and figuratively.
I've registered for an early season half-iron race this Sunday: 1.2mi Swim, 56mi Bike, 13.1mi Run
I have never seen the course, but it's reputed to be brutally hilly: "...nestled in the Appalachian foothills...the race will challenge all...
Hello all -
I'm curious - who is working toward some specific, challenging goals? For instance, Hosacktom training for a marathon, Mark Wagner looking to rack up 2400 post-op running miles, I think I recall Tom was planning another mountain climb.
Who else is on a mission? I love reading...
Almost two years after surgery, I'm still struggling with running. I continue to make gradual but very limited improvements. I can do 10-12 miles of shuffling w/o much problem, but pace is still pathetic. WHat holds me back is heart rate...once I get to mid-160's, I start to feel pretty...
Hey you fitness and exercise junkies...
There are several of us who engage in regular cardio sports - cycling, running, mountain climbing, etc. What are your thoughts on usefulness of a new forum category "Active Lifestyle" or something to that effect?
There's really not a published body of...
