I have my surgery scheduled for March 18th and found out today I have to have a root canal. I've got a message in with surgeon but haven't heard back yet. The dentist has me scheduled for Thursday the 5th and told me to take 4 amoxicillain one hour before I come in.. Can this put my surgery date off? I'm hoping surgeon nurse gets back to me soon, but couldn't help but ask on here while I'm waiting!!!!

I think, and someone will say if I am wrong, but I think you will be fine. You still have 13 days until surgery. Best of luck on your root canal.

Hopefully not, Carole. But if you need a crown after the root canal -- and you usually will -- you may have to wait a few weeks for a permanent crown to be made. At least that was the case with my crowns and my 2 root canals.

THank you!! I new I would get some answers!!!!I will need a crown but he is going to do something (can't remember what he said now) so I can wait until after I heal from surgery to do that. I'm behind on my teeth cleaning so they want me to ask the surgeon if they can go ahead and do that before surgery..... I don't think they will be calling me until tomorrow since it is 6:00 now... I'm going to call again early tomorrow morning since root canal is Thursday!! I will be praying for you Dyna!!!

Your dentist will probably make a temporary crown that should hold you until the six months after surgery when you will (probably) be cleared to finish your dental work.

As long as you have no infection in your mouth, your surgeon will most likely be okay with your situation. I had to have a letter from my dentist verifying for my surgeon I had no infection.

Ask your dentist if he can finish everything before surgery; otherwise, you have to wait six months after surgery before you can do any dental work. And I personally, shall wait 8 months! :)

I had the exact same margin between a root canal with subsequent cap and my AVR surgery. Neither my cardiologist nor my surgeon felt it was a problem. I did take the prophylactic antibiotic as a precaution, but it all worked out.

Carole;
I just had some major dental work done today march 3rd.My surgeon insisted on me getting it done before surgery and my surgery is scheduled for March11th.So you should be fine!!!!

I hope your mouth isn't hurting too bad!!! It sucks having so many different things at one time, but we will be fixed soon!!!:D

A little late here, but I had an emergency root canal done on a tooth I had crowned about 4 weeks earlier, and I had it done a week before surgery. Good luck with your surgery! I had mine on March 17th...St. Patrick's day. I'm 2 weeks away from my 5th anniversary so it must be a good time of the year to have it. I see you're from the south too...I felt it was a really nice time to recover from the surgery with the mild temps.

Every Surgeon will want a "Clean Bill of Dental Health" *before* surgery.

This is because bacteria in the mouth can get into the blood stream and there is an elevated risk of Endocarditis for 6 months *after* surgery meaning that you will be advised NOT to have ANY Dental Procedures for 6 months following surgery.

Endocarditis can have the nasty effect of 'undoing' all that 'good work' the surgeon just performed on your heart.

Once your Root Canal is completed, you should be "Good to Go".

Best Wishes,

Just talked to nurse and she gave the go ahead. I'll get the root canal tomorrow and the cleaning (hopefully) waiting to hear back from dentist now!!! I'm starting to get better at waiting ha ha!!!
