SO...I was thinking about starting a mileage challenge, Cooker throw down style...and charting our way across the U.S. It is an old runners challenge, many across the U.S. foot races have been held over the centuries....we could use I-90 from Boston to Seattle at 3044 miles or I-40 from Wilmington, NC to Barstow, CA, 2560 miles. Keep track of your walking, running, swimming, biking miles each day, and we will post up once a week...thoughts?

I think this is a great idea! I would participate in some form.

Sounds great to me! :D Guess I should go out and get a pedometer? Any suggestions for one? Or some other way of tracking miles walked? I THINK the walking trail I follow is about a mile, but I'm not sure. :D

Sounds good to me, Tom.

Our Parks and Recreation department sponsored a "Swim the Mississippi" every year where we tracked our mileage from Lake Itasca to New Orleans.
You got a shirt when you finished, and it was at your own pace.

I think I'm up for a run across America, and since I'd like to stop in and visit Phyllis ;):pI'd prefer the I-90 route myself.:)

Niki,
Here is a neat site that will tell you the distance of any route you want to measure. Type your town and state at the top and then zoom in to your route. Click "Start recording" to the left and then double click on each corner of your route from start to finish.

The site is:

Tom,
Count me in on the mileage challenge.

Forrest Chimp

I can see it now, The Chimp running like Forrest Gump, followed by an ever-enlarging coterie of fans. Later, explaining it all, The Chimp will recall:

"That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run. So I ran to the end of the road. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd run to the end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just run across Greenbow County. And I figured, since I run this far, maybe I'd just run across the great state of Alabama. And that's what I did. I ran clear across Alabama. For no particular reason I just kept on going. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on going. "

(Okay, substitute South Carolina. But soon enough Forrest Gump-Chimp will be crossing 'Bama. :p:p:p)

And of course this memory:

"When I got tired, I slept. When I got hungry, I ate. When I had to go, you know, I went. " (Full of prune juice, that would not be a pretty sight.) :D:p

Thanks for the link! That's pretty cool (even if it did take me forever to figure out how to get it to work ;) ). I'm not absolutely certain if the milage is right, since some of my path is not on the map (it's a walking trail, so not on a road map), but I estimated and it looks like it's about 1.3 miles. I usually do it in about 25 minutes. Coming back is always harder because it's uphill-ish. I'm feeling inspired and may take myself out for a walk this evening. :D

ETA: I just looked at it again and saw the "satellite" option. I used it to get a more accurate view of the path I actually take and it comes out to closer to 1.2 miles. I guessed pretty close!

"Life is like a box of chocolates" ...... oops, sorry ....wrong thread:rolleyes::p

Update on Chimp Gone Wild:rolleyes: ... the desire to run has not subsided ... on the advice of those more experienced I have cut back some ... I am now jogging or trotting 50% of the time and can do a mile nonstop with ease:) Quite a feat for a 52 year old ex smoker, ex drinker, hell ex everything, almost;)... By the way, what is more of a run, jog or trot? ... I did do a three mile nonstop SLOW jog, longest ever, but that was pushing it ... I have logged sixteen miles this week and feel great! I'm looking forward to the cross country chart Tom is putting together!! ... Hey Tom ... Can you have it go through Hershey Pennsylvania???:D:D

It sounds like Cooker is looking for a choclate stop along the way! I apologize for not getting the thread started this week, real life work has interfered with my VR virtual life!:)

It's great that you can run or jog again, Cooker. I enjoyed keeping in shape by jogging until about three years ago when I found I couldn't do it anymore. I still walk at least 2 hours a day, every day, but maybe someday I'll be able to return to a light jog at least.

Cheers,

Jim

Yes, Hershey, PA makes the chocolate, and they raised their prices a couple weeks ago too.
