Takes you to a new set of eight photos, which I have collectively labeled ?Road trip? There is something the size of a postage stamp that shows 8 photos, and offers a view as a slide show. I think this is something flickr calls a set, with an offer to show as a slideshow. I think it is a waste of time, and recommend you simply view the first 8 photos. Each of these 8 have the label ?Road? at the end. Again, by fooling around, you should be able to get a full screen picture (but you might choose to skip the bigger sizes unless you have a hi speed connection).

For those who want to participate, the following might be fun to know:
1. Which of these roads most beckons you? A few words of explanation would probably be fun for the rest of us to read.
2. What is the city where the mystery road is located?
3. These tunnels are nearly identical in size. What type of vehicle would you guess was intended to use these tunnels? (With only inches to spare?)
4. Assuming he cares to express an opinion, which road do you think Cort would find most tempting for a road trip?
5. I will ask Cort to consider conveying his choice to me in a private message, to be revealed at the end.
6. BREAKING NEWS: I just got through to Cort, and he has agreed to issue his preference as official road trip guru once we have had a chance to express our guesses.
7. Although it is possible to type your comments directly under the picture in the flickr site (and you are surely welcome to do so), I think more people will see and enjoy them if you post them as a part of this thread. (Your call).

I hope you enjoy.

The mystery road is in Tokyo, Japan.
I prefer the Puerto Rican road because just beyond it lies the ocean.
And I think Cort would enjoy the Around the Corner Road because he always wants to know "what's around the next bend?" type of guy.

My favorite - Autumn Road- I love Fall. It's my favorite season.

You guys are right about the mystery city being Tokyo. But the tunnels question is a bit tricky. The answer is not trains, in any way shape or form. I hope you keep guessing.

Well, then I'll confess that "trains" was Glenn's answer.:D I have to stop listening to him.

I'll also confess that I blew the Mystery City up to look at the billboards and saw the Tokyo Bank sign.

Dennis,
My favorite of all your pictures is the "Aspen Trees in New Mexico." It makes me feel calm.

Okay, I'll bite and take the mystery pic deeper. It looks like the Mori Tower in the Roppongi section of Tokyo. . . which begs the question, what were you doing in Roppongi (noted for its "red light" district)?

I lived around the Yamanote-sen in Setagaya-ku - north of Shibuya in Tokyo.

I don't know where I was.

I don't know where I was.

We were in Japan to attend the wedding of a young lady who stayed with us as a foreign exchange student for a year. Her family was very well off, and even more generous. They supplied plane tickets, lodging, meals and a private guide for five of the six members of our family for 10 days. (Our son-in-law missed out as he was deployed in Iraq.)

Maybe this helps: I took this picture from the same hotel window as I took the "road" picture. Does this give any better idea where we were?

Mystery Tunnel

This picture was taken in the last couple of months. The man's name is Emmett Cart, he is one of my best friends, and he did the dynamite work which enlarged the tunnels. They had been used for trains, but needed to be enlarged for the specialized vehicles. Emmett also was a driver of these vehicles. This is an obscure question, but you guys have always gotten everything else so quickly that I don't think it's time to give the answer yet.

Here is a strange coincidence. If you look closely, you will see "chopsticks" on the table. This picture was taken at our home, where two other friends from Japan were visiting us, and prepared a special (and delicious) Japanese meal. These two ladies were the toast of Jemez Springs, and were delighted to be in the wild west. (We had also hosted the daughter of one of these friends for a year as part of a student exchange program).

Mystery Tunnel:

Mystery Tunnel:

The tunnel mystery: Most people don’t know this, but there has been a substantial history of logging in Northern New Mexico. The tunnels were originally created for a small railroad that was used to haul the logs to a local lumber mill. In 1941 there was a huge flood (believe it or not) in Jemez Springs and the surrounding areas. The flood was so violent it destroyed the tracks.

By now the logging had extended a fair distance away from the railroad right of way, and trucks had been used to bring the trees to the train. The decision was made to use special logging trucks, and avoid the step of unloading from the truck & re=loading to the train. There is not a lot of documented history around here, but my friend Emmett remembers the trucks as being more than 16 feet wide. The truck “road” was monitored by radio, since there was no room for another vehicle on the road once they got started. After the dynamiting, Emmett laid down his explosives and started driving the trucks. Emmett, now in his seventies, still strong as an ox, is a legend in our town. He was the town’s original sheriff, and welded the town’s first jail cell. He once told me the following story about driving one of the lumber trucks:

He had gone up with his wife, Rosemary, a real pioneer, with some wonderful stories of her own, to bring down one of the loaded lumber trucks-bigger than a locomotive, but on rubber wheels. Emmett hurt his hand, but not seriously. Rosemary, who was 8 months pregnant, mentioned that they could have been in real trouble if he was hurt seriously, since she didn’t know how to operate the big trucks. So, it was quickly decided that this was the day for “Rosie” to learn. Now Rosie is driving this huge truck down a snow & ice covered mountain road. The truck itself is every bit as wide as the road, with a drop off down to the river on one side, rocks & timber on the other.

Suddenly they see an Oldsmobile speeding up their road-either he didn’t know or choose to ignore the rule about calling ahead on the radio to be sure no lumber trucks were on the road. Now there is a burst of activity in the truck cab. Rosie is trying to figure out how to get over enough to avoid a head on collision, while Emmett is yelling that with their full load she is going to tip them over if a wheel so much as slides off the road. Finally Rosie shouts at Emmett-I can’t stop so I have to get over-what do you want me to do: Emmett answered without hesitation: You’re driving a logging truck-you are going to stay on the road and you are going to hit that #@%%, that’s what you are going to do. Just before the collision the Oldsmobile veered into the woods, and a giant plum of snow was the last they ever saw of the Oldsmobile.

In the next couple of days I will be asking Cort to post his choice for a "road trip". WE could use a few more guesses if anyone is so inclined.

I think I am permitted my own guess:

I think I am permitted my own guess:

I am guessing the Colorado Road. (Blue Mountains, narrow road). If you choose the large size picture, you can see an eagle flying.

Not to highjack, but I had to post this. It's the Friday evening sunset this past weekend while we were on our annual houseboat trip with our best friends. We're just on an Army Corps of Engineers lake in Illinois. No manipulation of the photo, what you see is what we got. Thank you God, that was really pretty.

Choices

Choices

Dennis, I choose the Old San Juan road for myself. I was there when I was 12, and would like to go back. Like Karlynn I want o get to the water. Actually I want to get on it in a boat! I did guess logging trucks after I read about Emmet and the dynamite. Love the story of Rosie driving! As for Cort, I think he might choose one of the long roads...The motorcycle looks like it has a bigger engine than my car! Karlynn, your are definately blessed when you get one like that! Dennis, Please thank your son-in-law for his service for me. I'm hoping to get my nephew back healthy in a few weeks. Thanks for the pics! They are wonderful! Brian

The more pictures the merrier.

The more pictures the merrier.

I enjoyed the other pictures. Karlynn, where you guys on Lake Michigan?

Brian: I am prejudiced, but I think we have some of the greatest young people in our military services. I sometimes forget, but want to pray for all of our people daily, and will remember your nephew in those prayers.

I plan to be back in Puerto Rico over Christmas, and it will be my delight to deliver your thanks in person. I hope to be in the ocean (shallow waters only) and will think of you.

has anyone found the eagle in the (my) Colorado picture? You probably need to opent he large size of the photo to find it..
Yes, but hard to see. I even tried a copy of just the eagle but it's so tiny it doesn't really show.
