hello everyone, i have been home for a few days im feeling pretty good. The worst part of the whole thing, was staying in the hospital. My night nurses were horrible. I went in to tueday and came home on friday. I told my surgeon he had to get me out of there before they killed me.

My heart valve needed to be replaced bad and the surgeon said HE didnt know how long it would have gone if i kept putting off like i was doing.

The good thing is im home and im doing pretty good. Food tastes horrible to me, i dont sleep very well do im hoping all that will come back eventually. Well ill write more later, going to get my stitches out today.
THank everyone on here for all the support and encouragement you h ave all given me. IT means alot to me

I'm glad to know that you made it OK Sarah. You probably 'cut it pretty close' as your surgeon noted.

Short Sleep cycles and lack of taste for food are Very Common after OHS. They do resolve in time. Just remember, NAPS are GREAT. Take as needed. I know I only slept for about 3 hours at a time for several weeks.

My (first) surgeon told me to "eat whatever appeals to you". Your body needs the food to give you the energy to heal.

Be sure to use your Incentive Spirometer (Breathing Exercises) regularly to help clear out your lungs and prevent pneumonia from setting in. I was told to do the breathing exercises for 10 minutes every 2 hours after I developed some 'breathing issues'. The exercises worked.

Glad you are home! Your sleep and food problems are common- that will get better in time. I laughed when I read your post, because the day before Dick was discharged he went up to the Residents gathered around the nurses station and told them he wanted out the next day "before they all killed him"!

good to hear you are home. take it easy, eat what you can, the only things that tasted good to me were, believe it or not, Diet Coke and Graham crackers ! I had been so looking forward in hospital, to a plain jam sandwich and a glass of milk, and it was just disgusting - and milk is my favourite food, after chocolate !

Welcome home!!!! Sorry to hear about your stay at the hospital, especially the night nurses. I actually thought I had a great experience around the clock. I know what you mean about the taste of food. It took me several weeks before things started to taste good again. Best wishes for a smooth and speedy recovery.

I had some wonderful nurses both shifts. I thought the hospital food was awful but later found out that my taste was off and still is so maybe the hospital food wasn't as bad as I thought.

So glad to hear that your home.

I would almost be in tears when it was bed time - yes I was sleeping in my bed. But it got better as time went by.

Take Care and be good to yourself

Sarah, Congratulations on being home. Yup, it feels good, doesn't it. :)

You brought back memories of my "favorite" night nurse, I nicknamed her "the vampire". 3am she'd come in to give me a blood test, I swear with a blunt needle. Of course I was having trouble falling asleep so 3am was an hour after I had *finally* drifted off.

Ahhhh, to be home at last! :)

Peace,
Ruth
