Sine I am now the proud owner of a St Jude mechanical aortic valve and am taking coumadin my wife wants me to get some sort of medical alert bracelet/necklace, etc. I am not a jewelry wearer, I wear a watch, a wedding band and that's it. I don't really want to wear a bracelet or necklace but will do so as a last resort. Do you fine folks think that it is a necessity? Anyone have any suggestions on what? I told my wife I should have it tatooed on my chest but she wasn't too keen on that. Thanks for your input!

yes, it's a good idea to have something as id for coumadin. If you are hurt and can't tell people, they don't have to ask if your id is visible at first glance.

I saw on TV the other day that the 3 top er visits were related to heart meds, one of which was blood thinners. Better safe than.........

Course others might have suggestions.

When I was going through the issue of trying to figure out which bracelet to buy, I was told by some local EMTs that they look in billfolds for cards and even on the underside of watches for engravings. I also once knew a guy who wore a tag pinned to the top of his underwear. (Don't ask how I knew ;) ) You might want to talk to the ambulance companies/ERs in your area and see what they say.

You definitely need some type of identification. I wear a bracelet next to my watch and do not notice anymore that there are two items.

You need some type of identification. I am not a jewelry wearer, watch and ring just like you. I knew I would hate having a bracelet dangling on my wrist so I got the necklace, stainless steel and durable. I don?t even know it?s there anymore.

Lauren's Hope was listed on this site, I have ordered several items from them, very nice for women. I had coumadin, OnX Aortic Valve, my cardio's office name and number engraved on mine, it all fit.

They have some nice men's items, watches, stainless steel cuff bracelets, etc.

Medic Alert has items also, plus registration and fees.

You have protected yourself and saved your life with a new heart valve, the next step is to make sure that nothing jeopardizes that. You really don't want to be in an accident and be without medical information on you...wallets can be misplaced or lost in accident scenes; wear a necklace or bracelet!:)

I have a bracelet but also printed out Coumadin on my Brother labeler and have it on my driver's license.

if you are interested..and if I am allowed to post it..
Medic alert isnt' the only place to get them
http://www.laurenshope.com/category.aspx?id=1 has very nice ones.. kids/men/women..lots of variety and style
I have no affiliation with them, just purchased several over the years from that site.

It is a good idea to carry some medical ID. I have a wallet card and I also wear a sport type velcro wrist band from laurenshope most of the time. It does not look like jewelry.I feel better wearing one during exercise and outdoor sports in case I ever need medical attention.

I've seen some new ads for a Medic Alert Watch with the symbol on the face and engraving on the back.

I don't particularly like things around my wrist (and take my watch OFF often, just to get rid of that irritation. For ME, a Medic Alert Necklace seemed the Best Choice as I could put it around my shirt collar, thus avoiding the skin contact / irritation. If you don't care to 'advertise' so publicly (I'm not concerned about that issue), you can tuck the pendant inside your outer shirt.

By the way, did you get a Valve Identification Card from St. Jude? If not, contact them and get one for your wallet. See www.sjm.com for contact info.

I also carry business cards for each of my Doc's plus my Coumadin Clinic in my (overstuffed) wallet.

I like Karlynn's idea about putting a COUMADIN label on your driver's license. (Karlynn, your Left Brain is working just FINE :)

I really like Karlynn's idea of a sticker...great thinking girl!...

I keep my StJudes card in my purse/wallet in the clear plastic area where others keep photos instead of buried amongst all the other cards...that way its the first thing people would notice if the need ever arose. Probably should get a bracelet/necklace as well cos you dont always carry your wallet with you.
