Hey i need some suggestions PLEASE!!!!!!
I was bounced around the last few days in the hospital i was in for room
and shortages of beds, ended up 2nd last day in icu just for bed.
Got to know nurses well in icu and was warned i'd be moved too g5 for the
night ,but was warned about Dr. Hammer there and icu nurses told me they'd
assign me to my Doc cus she would keep me in for 2 weeks otherwise, even if my inr was stable.

I got to g5 shared coed with 70year old gentleman
Hr was having avr the next morn.Dr. Hammer came in
saw him and she looks after patients on this floor before
surgeries for heart...right.She walks up to him with her
interns and says you pulled tooth yesterday, your surgery is
bumped,you can,t have it....this gentleman almost had a
heart attack to this news,as she walked toward me....stopped:eek:
looked at her notes and said OH your assigned to your own
Dr's you can wait all day.....I said thats fine....Thank-you
The older gentleman in tears suggesting this Dr. wears her name
to truth of her personality,as she hammered him hard as she hid
behind her interns and argued with the gentleman....no surgery.

Long story short he phoned his card. and surgeon who
both arrived in less than half hour told him she had no right
or autority to try and cancel his surgery and she would be
spoken to regarding this.he was on antibiotics and the infection
of his tooth was out ...surgery as planned for him,his blood pressure
was up and he was upset.

Moral of this story,i don't want her near me can i suggest this
after being warned about this Dr. on floors by nurses,i will
end up on her floor for presurgery and even having unpleasant dreams
of this Doc already .

Can i suggest to one of my Doc regarding this and that I
prefer she remain off my file and would i mention it to
my Family Dr. here or to Edmonton when they call me with
my surgery date.........or do i just take her on:eek::eek:
Any suggestions would be appreciated really bothers me alot
and fact i have been warned by other floors and nurses.
Thank-goodness icu nurses saved me from her the day i was
discharged.........I owe them big time.
Please suggest what i should do here,it's bothering me.

Bina they have one main Dr. assigned to each floor
to ease off pressures of our owm Drs and interns, but
i think i will mention it to my Doc. in edmonton,i'm sure
if other floors are aware of her then he would be also
When this happened it apparently wasn't the first episode
this Dr had created other problems,i'm just not sure if i
should allow it to be a problem for me,as i know i will be
on that floor presurgery.

Deb, I would definitely repeat this story to your doctor and give him the reasons why.

Deb…. I don’t know what will work or not work but you can say what you want to whoever you want …. Maybe it is different in Canada with the type of government medical vs insurance and co pay here but I am all for letting people know how you feel in the most pleasant way that you can.

I would talk to your personal doctor and try and get a read from him/her …. Good luck!

I don't know how the Canadian system works but if it were me in the hospital here, I would just tell them when I checked in and was put on her floor that I had prior experience with her and I did not want her to have anything to do with my care. I did that with a nurse when I was at the Mayo who just rubbed me the wrong way. After she left my room, my husband went to the desk, asked for her supervisor and said we didn't want her to be my nurse for the remainder of my hospital stay. She never crossed the threshold of my room again.

I fired one of Joe's hospital doctors once when she didn't know anything about Heparin. She was an Internal Medicine doctor, and not a very good one, unfortunately. I told the cardiology doctor that I wanted her off the case, and to have Joe reassigned to the Cardiac unit. He agreed, he didn't like her either.

I also fired another Neurology hospital doctor because he failed to diagnose a hemmorhagic stroke that Joe developed.

So, sure, if you don't want that doctor on your case, speak up. She sounds like a witch.

Deb,

I agree with everyone else, tell your doctor and anyone else that can stop this doctor from seeing you. The last thing you need before surgery is the stress that this doctor will cause you. The patient advocate group may not be able to help if you haven't actually been a patient of this doctor before.

Thank's everyone,
Yes Mary I agree too with everyone,Bina,Cooker(thanks)
Kim sorry you had to deal with this nurse, seems theres one
in every hospital no matter where we live:eek:
Nancy our trooper(Fired) the Doc's....you wanna come be my hero
when i go for the watch of Dr.Hammer:eek:
She was terrible to this man,her personality was poor, and she was
out to get him....he even cried at the way she treated him,he'd been
in hosp. aweek already waiting for surgery and he was soooo ready
till she burst his bubble that morning.
I just saw her poor demeaner ability dealing with this man and
i feel Keep her away from ME:eek: You had to be there to understand
her way or no way and icu already was changing any plans for me,
regarding meeting her.
Anyhow this gentleman had surgery wed. I called and all went fine
for him and his wife.
I was just wondering if i had too much time on my hands off work
waiting for my call for surgery, that i really don't want this Dr. near me
The nitemare proved more so i donot........i will inform the Doc
Thanks again everyone:)

My own personal feeling was that she was showing off for the interns that were with her, playing "Big Shot".

Report her if she pulls anything on you, after you fire her, that is.:D

Deb, I know it is easier said than done, but do not fret over this. Who knows how she will be with you. Concentrate on positive thoughts and positive outcome as you need all the good energy to surround you. I shall pray for her to be kind and for you to be surrounded by angels to protect you from her. :)

My vote goes to ask to have another Dr, you have enough on your mind already. Two of my nurses where heartless in the way Dr. Hammer was and it almost doubled my pulse when they came in the room, even worse when I was alone. I would try to avoid her. Regardless try to stay positive the outcome will be a good one.

Hi Deb, I do agree with the others, you should be able to have this Dr. Hammer removed.
Who really calls the shots there? HER or the surgeons?
Tell that great surgeon you have how you feel....remember he said you were "special" and I'm sure he would understand how you feel and wouldn't want anything or anybody to cause you more stress.

How's that leg doing?

I'm just home from Edmonton, in fact, so I missed this thread. (I went to see Cats and not doctors though). The floor doctor is there so that someone is available to write orders for additional pain meds, IVs and immediate life saving procedures. Your roommate was wise to call his doctors.

What would have happened had he taken her at her word and broken the NPO order early? That would have been a self-fulfilled prophesy for cancellation. I've never heard of Dr. Hammer, but if she's going to be writing orders for you post op I really think you need to sort out her powers wrt your aftercare chart by talking to your doctor. No matter what, always take your surgeon's and cardio's advice.

But if you've got to ask for extra pain support, it would be nice to not have to battle the doctor in charge of authorizing it.
