Heart lung machine

I was wandering how long during the surgery to repair, replace or whatever they have to do with the valve, how long does a person have to actually be on the heart lung machine or pump, usually it isn't the whole duration of the surgery, right, isn't it just maybe like a half an hour or so. I need some info. on this. One of my many questions. Thanks.

Each situation is unique. Ball park for most people is 45 minutes to an hour, but some go longer then that. Just depends on what the surgeon runs into.

My operation started at about 8:00 a.m. and was originally supposed to be done at about noon. However, it was complicated and went on until 1:45 p.m. With all that, I was on the pump 2 hours.

Hi. According to my hospital notes I was on bypass for 1 hour 50 minutes.

Everyone is different, so I'm not sure if this will help, but I was on the machine for 90 minutes

Everyone is different and every situation is different as well. They do not want you on the pump for any more than two hours...damage begins to get worse at this point. I was on the pump for 1 hour 56 minutes.

I don't think there is any surgeon in the world that will have you on it one second longer than necessary; if we know it's not the best thing in the world for you, so do they ! I know that doesn't really answer your question, but as most people have said, every situation is different, and even your surgeon won't be able to tell you until you are out, as there are so many variables.

My surgeon repaired my VSD and then tried to repair my aortic valve. He took me off of the Heart-Lung machine but was not satisfied with the results, so he put me back on it and performed the Ross Procedure. I was on the H-L machine for a total of about 3.5 hours and it hasn't seemed to affect me negatively.
