Has anyone else experienced sudden ringing in the ears, clogged sensation, inner ear pressure problem where the pressure from the inside isn't equal to the outside pressure? I had to stop taking Toprol-XL because of this. Wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this and if your hearing went back to normal after stopping it. Or if you had found a way to get your hearing back.

Do you also take Aspirin? Aspirin is a known cause of Ringing in the Ears.

I wasn't aware of any problem when taking a Low Dose of Toprol-XL for a couple of years.

Well, now that you mention it.....I've had almost exactly this happen. Difference: my "ringing" is more of a low roaring noise, like distant traffic noise. Whether ringing or the noise I hear, this is known as tinnitus. I'm on plain generic metoprolol and lisinopril. I don't think tinnitus has been reported as related to these drugs, but I haven't checked thoroughly. My cardiologist was unaware. An ENT specialist said he sees tinnitus after OHS, but doesn't know why it occurs and said there is no treatment. My tinnitus and the other sensations you report, which I have had as well, have come and gone, or at least gotten somewhat better then resurged, for about 4-5 months starting about 3 months post-op. Sometimes it interferes with hearing, especially hearing speech and relatively quiet sound. But I just noticed that it seems not to have been a problem for the last few days. I can ignore the tinnitus noise and have no trouble sleeping. So, I've more or less let this go on. But you raise a good possibility. I'm a pharmacist (retired) and don't recall this as being among side effects of beta blockers, and if this were due to metoprolol, you would generally expect it with other beta blockers unless it is due to one of the other effects, like alpha agonist or beta 1 vs. beta 2. I guess I should look into it more. Initially this felt a lot like a middle ear infection, wouldn't you say? It wasn't quite right (not as much sound muffling as a middle ear infection, and the tinnitus is usually not part of an infection), but I decided to see what it would do, as middle ear infections in adults are self-limited and will resolve on their own or with a little Sudafed to help drainage. But it didn't get better, and after a couple of months I had my doctors check - no fluid, no infection. The ENT did a thorough hearing test and found nothing remarkable but wants me to repeat it in 6 months. Other than some trouble with the tinnitus noise interfering with quiet sound hearing, my hearing loss has not been marked.

Thanks, Lyn! I tend to not put much weight in side effect laundry lists as you get down to the rare ones. You get some things that are single reports and are just guilt by association, but there it is, along with hearing loss. It sure could be real. Since it is peculiar and hard to relate to the basic pharmacology, we don't know what would happen with another beta blocker. With Richard's hearing loss, it would certainly seem worth switching and seeing what happens or try a totally different class of drugs. I guess I should too. I'll have to pay more attention to mine, as it seems to have receded. Since I have it with generic metoprolol, it is probably not related to excipients in the Toprol XL tablet but to the metoprolol itself.

Richard, based on what Lyn found and the potential seriousness of your problem, you should see if your doctor will get you on a different med that will accomplish the same goal, perhaps something that is not a beta blocker. I'm going to think about it too, but I have been doing so well on metoprolol, I may go a while longer to see how it goes.

Thanks for finding that Lyn!
