hi guys

i just got my hospital bill today. it was for $96,442. thats more than me and my wife make in a year. they billed the insurance and said that we were responsible for any balance. imagine if i had to pay the whole thing. i would have to rob Citibank just to pay my hospital bill. next up comes the surgeons, the anathesologist and the actual valve, which i heard could be up to $30,000. i am in the wrong profession. instead of counting the money i should be making the money. i now what my kids are gonna be when they grow up.............................broke:)

Holy crap!

What kind of surgery did you have to cost that much? That's insane. I really hope your insurance covers it for you.

Wow.

aortic valve replacement in for 5 days
i brought my own nurses ( my beautiful wife and awesome mom)
no private room but was fortunate that i went in right after x-mas so they were slow and i only shared a room while i was in icu.

My first round at Cleveland Clinic was $249,000.
My second round locally, $169,000.
Of course I had some major problems, but I could own a small island somewhere for this kind of money.

This surgery can cost anywhere from 100,00.00 to 250,000.00 depending on what and how it is done, or if there are any complications, I would bet that some people have racked up more than that.

My husband is in the hospital and has been since December 30. He'll be there for several more days, I would guess into the end of next week. That should also be a good one, since he's also had several invasive tests, and more labwork than is imaginable.

Ouch for all of you !

Ouch for all of you !

Well our system might not be great ..but its free ...thankgoodness !....here I'd have a real job getting insurance to cover health ..I already pay three times more than other people my age for life insurance and travel insurance was hard to find last summer ...one firm said they'd insure me ..but not my heart ...Hubby said that was fine take it and leave my heart in the fridge till I get home ....LOL....
so glad we have no bills to pay or money worries about prescription charges.
my thoughts are with you all

Hi,

I also got my bill for AVR (St Jude) on December 4, 2002.

The total was $59829.97. Five days in the hosptital.....2 in ICU and three in the stepdown unit. None of which were private.

Nursing Care was minimal in the last three days.

$780.00 for PT which was also minimal. Two short walks and some exercises.

7 Amiodaone tabs=$2004.00 ?????? I think this mst be a mistake that I hope BC picks up on.

St Jude's Valve=$9180.00.

Curious how the tissue valves compare in price?

Donna

My total was about the same Donna, right around $60,000. I got a homograft valve and that cost $12,000. How's your recovery coming by the way? I'm doing good. Hardly sore at all. Started lifting things recently. Not too bad. Still walking everyday. Hope all is wel with you.

I was is Cleveland Clinic in Mar. 1995 and shortly after, Oct. 1995, I was hospitalized at a local hospital to have a pnemothorax recected. I was in a total of 31 days and the bills totaled about $189.000.00. It wouldn't have been bad except my heart wasn't fixed. Luckily we have very good insurance and I think it covered all but about $2000.00 of it. The thing is, we have a cap. I think the last time we checked I only have about half a mil. left. I had 1.5 mil. but I had 2 open hearts, the lung surgery, hysterectomy and of course I've been hospitalized numerous times for CHF. I am on SS disibility though. So I do have Medicaid. We figure it's neccessary. We don't know what I'll need done in the future and I'm only 41. I really don't know what people do who don't have insurance. Before I was married I couldn't get insurance. With a history like mine no one would touch me.

My total bill came to $71,350 and odd cents, (like 56 cents matters after 71K!). I am stilll working of $1250 that I need to cover with flex money.

I have not received my bill yet; however, before the surgery, I had to talk to the business office at Children's Memorial....and found out that I will be reponsible for at least $1,750 of the total (the deductible + my out-of-pocket limit). Thus, I owe the hospital approx. $100 a month for the next 18 months (no interest). It's frustrating because that means I'm going to have to "tighten the budget" even more...and some planned summer trips may have to be canceled :(.

Cort - You're not thinking the right way yet. Remember that those trips will not be canceled, only postponed. After your recovery, you will be there to go on future trips. Without the surgery . . . ?

Come on, be tough so I'll have someone else to look up toward when my time comes.

P.S. Small Blocks Forever! (I used to manage the World of Wheels custom car show at McCormick Place.)

Steve....I understand what you mean about the trips; however, it's not quite that simple.... I am not necessarily just talking about "road trips"...where you go visit whoever, wherever... I am also including trips such as to the Monte Carlo Nationals (this coming June in Ohio) or the first gen MC club meet (this year in Branson MO in August)....gatherings that, while they occur every year, may not be as close in proximity to me next year...make sense?

He he he...as for being tough...I'm a trying....more than people realize, I'm sure........... Heh...those dang staples really did me in, tho, last Friday........

Holy crap man...what a small world...I've heard so many great things about the World of Wheels show...I've never been to one, tho might go this year... Been to the Chevy/Vette Fest and, of course, the Chicago Auto Show...but not the WOW....yet....

Was glad to see some of the more resonable quotes were still close to mine from back in '00 at around $60,000 at the Cleveland Clinic for a homograft and five days after surgery and all the tests etc. I also had some extras since I had a small stroke evidently with some temporary paralysis to my left hand...specialists and therapy.

Joann, 1999, $260,000. Fortunately we have good insurance and she will be on Medicare this summer. We are also starting to be concerned about the @2. Million Lifetime Benefits. Medicare will safe that issue.

Wow! Never made money like that!!!!!
