    Occasional pipe tobacco?

Julian, Thanks for your response, brother. Does your heart feel any different when you smoke? Just wondering what to expect post-AVR. I'm only expecting to smoke some pipe tobacco a few times per year.

    The sound in my valve

I am 10 months post-op with On-X. I notice that the valve ticking varies as well. Sometimes it's loud; sometimes quiet; sometimes, I can barely hear it. Often times, however, I just simply forgot that I have a valve. I have noticed that counting ticks puts me to sleep, though. :)

    Occasional pipe tobacco?

I was more so wondering if smoking was dangerous for AVR'ers? If so, how much more dangerous? What are the implications? Higher stroke potential? It would be nice to light up a pipe (Gandalf style) every now and then. I do not have addiction problems. Are there any smokers in this forum...

    Occasional pipe tobacco?

Hello all, I had an AVR about 10 months ago and had a quick question. Am I able to smoke pipe tobacco once or twice a month? Are there any associated risks with my heart being that I had an AVR? Thanks in advance and God bless! :)

    Shortness of Breath Post-Surgery?

Hello all, I haven't been on here for a while, but things have been extremely well, until just recently. I had my 6 month echo and EKG in December 2012 and my Cardio told me that everything looked perfect. Just last week, I started experiencing what I believe to be shortness of breath and...

    Mid-Twenties Aortic Valve Replacement

I had an AVR 5 months ago, at the age of 25. I chose the On-X mechanical valve, because of the possibility of avoiding another OHS. Let me tell you this: -I went back to work at 4 weeks. -Played QB for my flag football team at 5 weeks. -I started driving at 4 weeks. -I slept on my sides at 2...

Heart Rate Rises When Laying Down--Post AVR

Hello all, I am 5 months post-op next week and have recently noticed that my heart rate jumps up about 10-20 bpm when laying down (I've measured with my BP monitors). My blood pressure stays within normal range always though. Has anyone else experienced this? What could it be? I can...

How soon will work & driving resume after AVR

I was able to return to work after 4 weeks, and able to begin driving at 5 weeks. I found myself getting VERY sore driving though, as the muscles were contracting and beginning to work again, so I kept my driving to a minimum.

    Need Some Information And Encouragement

Hello everyone, I'm almost 5 months post-op and I have been experiencing some strange stuff, so I wanted to see if any of you have had similar experiences. Every couple of weeks for the last few months, my heart becomes more rapid (this lasts for 2 days or so), then goes back to normal. For...

    Mid-Twenties Aortic Valve Replacement

BostonJohn, I had my surgery three months ago (age 25). My recovery has been miraculous. I slept on my bed the same day I was discharged, slept on my side a week post-op, and slept on my stomach 2 weeks post-op. 1 month post-op, I was playing flag football with my buddies (as a...

    INR Question

Hello all, In the last week, my INR has dropped by .7, from 2.8 to 2.1, so I am still within normal limits for On-X (I believe it's 2.0-3.0). I am taking 5.5mg, except for Mon/Wed/Fri, where I take 6mg. I upped my dose today to 6mg per day, 7 days a week. My goal INR is 2.7-2.8. Is it...

    WOW, The pain!

I had excruciating pain for about 6 weeks. I notified my Cardio and Surgeon, and they both said it was normal. I had horrible shoulder tip pain, back pain, chest soreness, and clavicle pain. May just be your body working out all the kinks. For me, it's all gone now.

Read This If You're Waiting On An AVR

Hello friends, Just thought I'd write a word of praise for all of you soon-to-be AVR patients. Leading up to my AVR, I was so stressed, anxious, and scared. This website helped me out a lot by providing me with a ton of information, BUT often times, more information led to more stress for me...

Mini-sternotomy AVR - How long before I can travel abroad?

I was able to walk several miles 7 days post op and I was able to carry 25+ lbs 1 month post op. Now, I am almost 2 months post op and I have stabilized my INR (been stable for a month), I can walk several miles a day, and I have no chest pain or soreness whatsoever. I started sleeping on my...
