Hi everyone! Sorry that it has taken me almost 2 weeks post-op to send a message that everything is fine and I am on the mend.
My surgery was Tuesday, Feb 10-in at 7:30 am (walked in extremely calm) and from what my husband Joe tells me he got the call at 1:30 pm that they were done. Joe wasn?t allowed to see me for 3 more hours because when I woke up, I started to struggle with the ICU staff and tried to pull out the breathing tube ?don?t remember any of it but Joe says I was in ?real distress? (even after having my wrist bound to the bed!).
Wednesday, more of my family (2 at a time) was able to come in to see me. Chest tubes removed (don?t remember). I actually remember getting sick all over the Hematologist! Thursday, they moved me out of ICU and into a room (Joe was able to join me then and stayed with me). Was able to start liquids and saltines and moved into some solid food by Friday. Saturday (Valentines Day-Joe gave me beautiful heart shape earrings!), Hematology (the WEAKEST LINK of my experience) was concerned about my low platelet count and discussed a transfusion but after much consideration, they monitored it up until the time they discharged me on Sunday, Feb 15-a week from today!
Its great to be home-Joe and I have had a difficult time trying to manage all the meds at first but now I am down to 3 per day plus some percocet for pain.
If it weren?t for my husband, Joe, I would not have made it! He was with me all day, every day, took me to the bathroom, helped me in the shower, checked to make sure I had clean linens, checked that my meds were given to me (and when), managed family visits, planning meals at home, getting me out to walk twice a day, screening phone calls. I guess he heard everything I had been telling him about the surgery and recovery over the last 9 months!
Anyways, I am back and will be participating as a member who has made it! Thank you again for all your support and information that you had provided to my family and myself over the last 9 months. Oh, by the way, THE WAIT IS THE WORST PART OF THE WHOLE THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad to hear you are home!
You got sick on the hematologist! Oh my,sounds like you made them earn
their pay:D I was also in the hospital post op on Valentines' day and got
beaucop presents. Husbands really seem to pull thru for us,and afterwards
its almost hard to believe that they were able to do ALL that..nursing,
counseling,babysitting,in-law sitting,sleeping on nails,food delivery,maid
in hosp and home, secretary, and worrying all at the same time.
I only hope that I could have done as well for him...hard act to follow.
Wish you an uneventful recovery period:)

Glad to hear you are home and feeling much better. I know I had a lot of trouble in the hospital too. Sounds like hubby is a Godsend! Hope you feel better every day.

Teresa, I have been on the edge of my seat..I just sent you an e-mail....

Did you miss the whole A-Roid scandal? there should be a great reception at Fenway for him this year, what could top the blond girlie mask? Can't wait to see. Louanne

Hi Teresa,

Glad to hear you are on this side of the mountain and on the road to recovery. Take it easy!

Teresa,

Welcome home and I am happy for you. May you continue a smooth recovery.

I had an incident in the surgery room which my sister told me...the doctor in charge of ICU unit (I do not know why he was in OR) came running towards my hubby and sister (not sure when) asking them if I had any diseases...he was worried as when they cut me, my blood splashed into his face!!:D My sister calmed him down and joked with him that this was a blessing :D;) I should have asked him when he came nightly to see my progress, but I do not know why I didn't...he was very easy to talk to and very kind and caring.

Wishing you a speedy recovery

Teresa,
Im glad to hear that you made it thru the surgery.:D I was at B&W for my surgery consult the day after your OHS. It will be my turn 2 weeks from tomorrow, March 10th. I guess I should expect to be out of touch for a few weeks as well but I am a self confessed cell phone addict and cant imagine being out of touch for that long.;) I guess time will tell.
Keep us posted

Anyone had a mitral valve repair or replacement?

Anyone had a mitral valve repair or replacement?

Thats what the doctor tells me if it can be repaired but if not they will replace with mechanical. just got done reading the book that I ordered from the internet the patients guide to heart valve surgery by Adam pick. The book is a great read untill the last part when he has the op and it shows pics and tells how hard it was to recover.

Welcome back,

Welcome back,

we've been concerned about your progress. Glad to here you made it with few bumps. It certainly gives hope to those of us who are about to follow you on this path. Keep getting stronger each day and continue to let us know how you're doing.

Jane

Despite the poor hematologist, it sounds like you did very well. My hands and wrists hurt for so long I truly often wondered if they had had to tie me down, but no one ever mentioned it to me!

Congratulations on a job well done!!!!!

Now be gentle with yourself, and be patient. Recovery is a whole 'nother journey..... just not frought with the same scary anticipation.

Best wishes.

Marguerite

Welcome Home Teresa:D
Glad to hear that your trip over the mountain was a success. Now just take it easy and let your healing progress at a good pace. Yes, sometimes when we think our husbands don't hear a word we say they actually did. Isn't it a wonderful surprise. So just take care of your self and you will be out and about in no time.:)

Teresa, welcome home.Hope your recovery continues to go well.Sounds like your surgery is what I'm getting.Ascending aorta and valve replacement.Did the doctor tell you if you have any restrictions with the ascending aortic replacement???
