I'm back in the work field part-time or on a as need basis. I worked for our school system 26 years ago as a secretary. I worked five years at out large high school as secretary to the assistant principal, then I quit for three years to raise my son, went back to an elementary school and was secretary to the principal for 12 years. The Administration called me and asked if I would be interested in being a substitute secretary when a secretary has to be gone. I thought well what have I got to lose. I've been feeling great so why not. I could always use the extra money and it pays $11.50 a hour. This was last month and they have kept me so busy. I worked two weeks (3 days a week) at the high school, yesterday I worked at an elementary school and they just called me to work Monday at the same school. They have got about 12 other substitutes but I guess some of them don't want to work at the high school, some of them only have certain days they can work and others don't want to work around elementary children and some of them just say "No." I like all ages so it really doesn't matter where they send me. So far this hasn't interferred with my volunteering in ICU on Wednesday's. I'm still doing that too.

That's great Glenda and the best news is how well you are feeling!

You sound like you're having a great time, Glenda! I'm glad that you're enjoying the work.:)

I am sure you are very well like and do a good job, which would be my guess as to why you are getting called so much. Enjoy!

I haven't been on too much as school has been keeping me busy, but I try and at least check up on everyone as time permits. Here's wishing you all the best with your job, and I certainly know all about the extra money coming in handy thats for sure...((((((((((((((((((((((((Hugs From Harrybaby))))))))))))))))))))))):D:D:D

Boy I think I need to go back to school and study spelling! I typed my post so fast and didn't check the spelling. Good heavens! A fifth grader could spell better than that!

Working in ICU can be very depressing but I feel like God has put me there to help people that are going through a difficult time with a loved one's illness. I cry with them, pray with them and in general, just be there for them. I haven't had to sit with anyone dying for a long time. That's the "Hand to Hand" program at our hospital. It's a wonderful program. It's for people that are critical and don't have long to live. We sit with them if there is no family or friends that can't. I sat with a lady one time that her family just went home because they knew she was going to die anyway and they just didn't want to be there. I can't imagine! They disconnected her and she actually lived for about three weeks afterwards breathing on her own. I always sing to them by getting real close to their ears and usually their heart monitor can show me if they can hear me. Their counts go up. This lady loved to be sang to. I also rubbed lotion on her arms because patients dry out so bad laying in a bed 24/7 in a hosptial. The nurses told me to quit singing to her that I was keeping her alive. They finally moved her to a rest home and she died three weeks later. I also sat with a lady that had only a son and he wouldn't come in the room. He stayed out in the hall the whole time. She only lived about a hour but at least she didn't die by herself.

Glenda, many yrs ago, I used to volunteer in my daughter's elementary school.
I had a variety of tasks....grade one remedial reading, and assisting the office secretary, were my favourite.
Enjoy yourself, and try not to get too tired. :)
