I got home yesterday afternoon and am so glad to be here :) They almost sent me home on Monday which would of been only 4 days but my INR wasn't right yet, and actually still isn't but here I am.
Funny ICU story....
The first morning in ICU they had propped me up for breakfast, gave me my tray, then my nurse went for a break. The other two attending nurses were looking after another patient behind a curtain:D This was my chance to finally drink all I wanted( in my morphine haze). I drank milk, pineapple juice (the whole container) and ate some cream of wheat. Suddenly I was feeling like this wasn't a smart idea.....being alone what do I do...then I saw an orderly and got her to pass me a tray(must be neat about this...while I was looking frantically for my breast pillow. Even in the haze I remembered what you had said about the pain when coughing etc...
It must of been quite a sight one arm across the pillow and breast are, one arm trying to hold the tray...then trying to aim at the tray. MY first shot was very accurate all things considered, but the second round had no where to go :(
Breakfast was suddenly over:)
I'm doing well, I think. My scar is very itchy, I have some discomfort where the one drain tube was. I've been only taking Tylenol for pain since the 2 day. I've gone for one 5 minute walk today so far.
For those going for surgery soon, everyone on here is right the worst part is the wait. For the first few days in hospital I kinda felt like I was beat up, or ran over by a truck. Nothing unmanageable though.
Thanks for all you support before hand.

OMG, barfing in ICU.....not fun at all.
My hospital room mate barfed one morning too. I think there is an issue with breakfast too soon.:)
I was nauseated so skipping breakfast worked out okay for a couple of days.
The switch to Tylenol had me feeling much better. Rest often, over doing things will catch up to you.
Welcome home!

Welcome home Buffy! There is indeed, no place like home! :) I hope you continue to do well with your recovery. Take it easy on yourself, nice & slow. Your level of energy & well being will come along soon!

Take care! :)

Welcome home, Buffy. I am happy for you...you sound in good spirits. Thanks for sharing your cute breakfast story...I could not touch any food for three days...but drank and drank and drank juices and water, of course.

May you continue doing well:)

Welcome home! For me, the barfing was the worst part those first couple of days, and that is despite the fact that the Montreal Heart Institute does not give real meals the first two days. It gives four TINY snacks per day which consist of about 2-3 oz of apple juice and 2-3 oz of either applesauce or jello. Even when I had nothing in my stomach, I barfed up bile.

Your not alone Buffy,
I barfed in ICU too........to many/much ice chips, I don't remember any pain.
Zipper was asking about you and how you were doing - she had a good chuckle when I read her your thread. Sounds like Zipper will be coming home tomorrow.

Take care and be good to yourself Buffy and PLEASE don't over do things okay?

Welcome home, Buffy! I got a chuckle out of your ICU story (not that I like the idea of barfing...must have been horrible). Take good care of yourself, get some rest and remember...one day at a time. :)

Welcome home. Take it one day at a time and you will be back 100% before you know it.

Yep... hospital food is definitley enough to make you barf!! :D Otherwise it sounds like you're doing fabulously!! Being home is great though isn't it?

Wishing you all the best for a quick and easy recovery.

A : )

Buffy, great reading how well it all went and how fast you got to go home. You are very fortunate!!
It doesn't always go like that, believe me.

Food in ICU?
I was in ICU three different times when I had AVR but I wasn't eating nor drinking. They would only give me a little crushed ice and I didn't want that.

Glad you're home and hope your recovery goes as well as the surgery.

The funny thing about ICU, the night of my surgery I convinced the nurse to give me ice chips twice and did fine. Then a little later I convinced another nurse that I had done great with the ice chips and really wanted to have some water.....which she did :)
When I barfed that up...I'm sure she thought I'd lied about the ice chips in the first place and there was no convincing her of anything any more (even if I gave her my best drug induced grin)...tainted out relationship :)

Welcome home Buffy, wish you a smooth recovery. Reading your post got some courage and hope to face the surgery in feb.

Thanks for sharing and take care,

Glad you are home and doing well Buffy! The waiting really is the worst part. I am so glad that I was in a private room when I came out of surgery. The cardiac units here in Ohio are each private rooms with doors and each CICU room has its own nurse right outside the door! I did not barf, but felt like it more times than I can count! I really did not eat real food until day 3 so thank God I never had that issue!

I second everyone else that you need to rest and NOT overdo it. You will regret it if you do.....Take it easy and you will get better faster!

We should write a book about such incidents...I can write quite a few which made us laugh and eased off being in ICU. I even smile when I remember them.

Again, glad you are better and improving.

Welcome home Buffy. I'm sure you weren't the first to make a small donation in that ICU room! At least try not to do the same at home! All the best wishes for a pleasent and speedy recovery.
