After my first surgery, I was only in the hospital for four days. Is this pretty average, or were you in longer?

Hello,
I was supposed to go home after 7-9 days, but my INR was low and I ended up staying in for 16 days.
The longer stay was fine with me since I was very nervous to go home and live so far away from the hospital.
I believe that the average is about one week....without complications of course.

This question has come up before on the forums, and my impression is that the answer varies greatly.

I was in the hospital 5 days. Barely got out late on 5th day because I had to show them my oxygen intake had reached a high enough level. Did a lot of walking around the nurses station that day. :D

It depends upon your recovery, but without complications the average seems to be 5 days.

I was in ICU for 5 days and in normal ward for another 5 days. Even though I am still young (32) I had low Sat. levels and on oxygen most of the time.

There is no way to know in advance how long you will be in the hospital. This last one, I went in planning for 5-6 and stayed for 9. My first one I was in the hospital for a total of 21 miserable days, but that is when they actually used to let you stay in the hospital!

i stayed in hospital 2 days before and 4 days after the surgery. it could be longer but i insisted to leave.

I was planning on 4 - 5 days but ended up staying 21 days due to complications with my lungs and an infection.

I was admitted, and had surgery, on the Monday and was discharged the following Sunday. I was told I stayed an extra 2 days from the norm due to a low grade fever.

I was in 7 days but it was the surgeons fault. They had collapsed one of my lungs in the procedure so my O2 count was pretty low. It took me 3 mos to fully reinflate the thing.

There are so many factors that determine how long a stay one has after surgery. I think I was one of the quick release ones. Surgery was Friday and I went home Monday.

My surgeon told me that I would stay in the hospital 3-4 days. I stayed ten days, as my INR was very low and he did not want to discharge me before it went up. Anyhow, I did not mind that, since anytime I felt anything, I asked the nurses and the doctors, while at home I would have become anxious about every little symptom.

Good luck:)

I was in for 2 months the first time 1971. I was 2 years old and had muliple complications and some other organ failures. The second time in 2005 I was in for 7 days. Then this November I was in for 14 days. I was set to go home in 6 but the pacemaker caused me to stay in another week. Sent home on Lovenox injections twice a day until INR was over 2.0. That being said there were people that were in longer than me with double bypases. I beleive it's how your body reacts.

I was in the hospital 7 days. It would have been a shorter stay but my chest tube drainage would not drop to acceptable levels.

Not counting the night before the surgery, I spent 5 days (and nights) in the hospital, the first of those 5 being in ICU.

I was in the hospital for one week, but for 5 days after surgery. I flew home, was home for 24 hours then take by ambulance to new hospital 15 minutes from my home. I had complications (congestive heart failure) from the surgery, I stayed there for nine days.
