I was doing dishes a few minutes ago & saw something flying in the back of our pecan orchard & I ran quickly to get my camera & here is what I saw...........this magnificent hawk trying to get his bounty of mice, squirrels but hopefully NOT my cats!

Thanks, that brightened my day! Here it's raining and cold. I am just about to leave for a Christmas party in a stable -- (how appropriate). My daughter rides and the barn owner throws a cocktail party every year in between the stalls and the horses watch. It's fun.

PS I get my surgery date TOMORROW.

I had one of those Hawks come from no where and grab a full size rabbit out of my yard. He had trouble flying with it, but fly he did to the nearest tree top he could find.

2nd picture opened for me too. Beautiful wing span.
Kinda looks like a Fulken (sp?)

You know, now that you've said that Freddie, it may indeed be a Falcon because it is huge! I wish I could have captured a picture on him when he was hopping around in the field looking for mice; he almost looked as big as a young turkey!!!

Dennis --- I'll send you an email w/an attachment to see if you can open.

Norma, that was so cool. The pics were great!
My brother had that happen in his backyard. A hawk came down and grab a rabbit and flew away with it. Marvelous thing to see. Poor rabbit.:(

Poor rabbit and at my hubby's work theres one hawk and this cat

had kittens all were wild of the cats, noone could rescue them, all

accept the hawk each morning you could see him flying sooooo high

in the air carring a kitten across the big open sky:eek:

Such a beautiful yet sad sight to endure.....mixed emotions of all gods

beautiful creatures he borrowed us to see.

Great shots! Very impressive ! I used to spend a lot of time birding, and love to see, and hear about others sightings. Brian

I love to watch the red tailed hawks around here. North Texas has a goodly population of predatory birds.

Once upon a time, when we lived east of town on some acreage, I was in the yard with my two hunting trained Labs. All of a sudden, a huge red tail swooped down right in front of us and grabbed a low-flying dove about 15 feet in the air, then settled to the ground about 50 yards away to eat.

The dogs wanted to give chase, but thankfully minded their "Leave it! No bird!" commands. That hawk would have torn them up for interfering with her dinner!

I don't think I'll ever forget seeing that kill. And thank goodness when the dog training works.

This hawk has been hanging around almost every day because we have a lot of dove feeding on the cracked pecans in the field & off course mice & some ground squirrels.

Well, Wednesday of this week, I got the scare of my life when I couldn't find Molly, our little black & white kitten & I felt for sure the hawk had made off w/her! I kept calling her name over & over & she wouldn't come but I could hear & see my next door neighbor's dogs barking & circling an old wrecked pick up they have parked in the back.

I was so upset & I went inside crying & woke up my poor husband & he got up & we both started looking for her. We went over to the neighbors', they were not home, & he pryed open the hood of the old truck & there was our Molly!!! :) I was so relieved to see see her & kept kissing her & hugging her. I don't think she'll be going over to the neighbors any time soon & I've been keeping her indoors more due to the hawk too. :)

I'm glad you found your kitten! We have two indoor cats and I am so paranoid that they will get out and be run over as we live on a main street and that happened to one of my cats 4 years ago.
We all get so attached to our pets!
Do you have to worry about coyotes too? Just north of us it is a big concern.
