Do your doctors recommend you get a flu shot after valve repair/replacement?

I get one annually and am supposed to get it Saturday. I've had a heavy cold since last Friday, no fever. Each day I'm a little better. Do you think it's safe for me to still plan to get my shot Saturday if I have remaining cold symptoms? Should I wait until completely over it?
Thanks.

My doctor highly recommends me getting the flu shot.
As far as your cold symptoms go, give your doc a call and see what he says, then lets us know. I've been thinking the same thing.

My first cardio, years ago, said sure get a flu shot. My current cardio and my family doctor both say if you want to go ahead. I've never had one before but think i'll start this year. I think your cold should not be a problem.

My Doc's have recommended Flu Shots for years.

I second Freddie's suggestion to Call your Doc / Nurse
about getting the shot now vs. waiting due to your cold.

(I'd be tempted to wait until you are better)

There has been a clinical trial of people who had been given the flu vaccine, some with a cold, some without, and there was no difference for them in whether or not they acquired symptoms of flu. The vaccine is not a live virus and a virus will not infect valves: that is something only bacteria will do, or so I've been told. I got mine last week- and asked, just to make sure, as he was poised to inject me!

Hope your feeling better soon ....colds:mad:arenot
my favorite tis the season.
Been getting my shot for the flu 16 years, got
mine tues as they suggested i get it for the surgery,
however was do for the pnumeania shot too but my
surgeon said cus of surgery for me to hold off that one
for sake of my body having to go through so much the
flue shot was enough for now.

My opinion would be wait for shot till you feel better
but check with your Doc to confirm.

Can you receive the inFLUenza vaccine if you have a cold?

Immunizations are best received when individuals are at their healthiest state to optimize vaccine effectiveness. If you are experiencing an illness with a fever, it is best to delay immunization. If you have a cold that has been present for a few days, and you do not have a fever, immunization is encouraged.

My doc wanted me to get a flu and pnemonia shot. I always heard you should not take them if you are sick. Just to be sure, I would call the doc.

Thanks, everyone. I will call my doctor to be sure but seeing as I've had this cold since last Friday, it will be over a week of having it until I get the flu shot on Saturday.

I have no fever and the cold is very much better.

Great quote.
Thanks for it. I'm inclined to go for the shot.
Appreciate everyone's input.

This was an excellent quote:

Please, get a flu shot. We are patients who fit into the "chronic health problems" category of who should get immunized. While you're at it, make sure your pneumonia vaccine is current. These viruses don't attack valves but they can infect smooth tissue and that means many vital organs can be compromised with a bad bout with the disease.

I went this morning to my PCC's flu clinic. I was 8 days into a cold and they said fine and gave me my flu shot. In the notice re: the clinic, they clearly said if you have cold or flu symptoms, you cannot get the shot. Seeing as my cold was so many days old, it was okay.

Had my shot yesterday and my arm is still sore :( She must have got the mussel good - feels like a grapefruit size bruise, but can't see nothing

I learned LONG AGO to RELAX the 'Target Muscle'.
Tense up ANY OTHER Muscle or Grit Your Teeth,
but make that Target Muscle go LIMP
if you don't want to be SORE for Days or Weeks.

Oh yes, Looking the Other Way or
Closing your Eyes also helps.

'No More Sore Muscles'

I'm glad you got your flu shot Jim. One year I was also just getting over a cold, and my doctor said it was okay to give me the shot, since I wasn't running a fever.

Al: I also make sure I don't tense up my muscle and look the other way. :)

My nurse has also been giving the shot in my arm I use the most, which for me I'm right handed, so the shot goes in my right arm. She said, it helps to give it in the arm you use the most, as you won't have a tendency to baby the arm with the shot, thus you have less pain, because the arm doesn't stiffen up. It made sense to me and I haven't had any pain, swelling or problems from flu shots since.

Flu shots every year

Flu shots every year

Al and I have been getting Flu shots every year for more than 20 years now. We just got out shots this morning at a grocery store clinic. Neither of us have had any ill effects. Actually, after we get the shot, we seldom think about it again until the next one is due.

Al was told that it is better to wait to get the shot rather than take it when ill.

Regards,
Blanche

This is all very interesting.
Since I didn't look and I tensed up my legs and relaxed my left arm.....and my SO was told that the shot should be done in the opposite arm that one uses :confused:

Got my shot this morning 5 weeks and a day after surgery. That was one of the questions I asked about before surgery. Didn't ask about getting a shot while having a cold. Regarding the pain in the deltoid, I've been getting flu shot for years and can't remember one that didn't hurt for a couple days. It feels the same as working out a little too hard except it's only in one little spot. At this point, I figure a flu shot is a walk in the park compared to what we've been through and compared to getting the flu!

Well Freddie, I'm just telling you what the nurse told me. I've been getting the flu shot for about 15 years. Up until about three years ago it was always given in my left arm and it always hurt. The past three years since this nurse has been giving me the shot in my right arm, I don't even feel it at all. She also had said, she felt it helped to get the serum flowing thru your body quicker too. I don't know. Have others gotten their shot in the arm they use all the time, and if they did, was it sore? I'm curious now.

Rght on Jeff! We've been thru worrse pain than a flu shot!
