Its 11:20pm on this Sunday evening and something bit me this afternoon - never felt anything until I started to scratch it. I didn't scratch it very long, just put some cream on it, which seemed to have helped until I looked at it 20 minutes ago. Its swollen - larger than a quarter, not really warm with a little red dot in the middle.
Can I take benadryl or anything while on warfarin? And/or will it be necessary to see the doc about this? Hate to see what the size will be in the morning.

I know its late, but does anybody have any thoughts or ideas? I do have some antibiotic's on hand - should I take those??? Just in case of infection?

If you do a search on benadryl I think you'll see some posts that say it doesn't effect INR. I wouldn't take an antibiotic unless the antihistamine isn't reducing the swelling and/or if there's a sign of infection.

That's just me though... I don't use antibiotics unless I have to because of the risk of C-diff or Clostridium Difficile, which is basically serious diarrhea that comes as a side effect of taking the antibiotics sometimes.

Thanks Aaron. I searched everything BUT Benadryl. The posts say its okay with warfarin.
Thought it was only for cold symptoms -well that's all I got and Clariton.
Gonna give it try and go to bed.

if you take benadryl you'll probably have to go to bed...:) it makes some people really sleepy.

Claritin will probably do the job just as well, but the standard treatment for anaphylactic reactions is usually iv benadryl, steroids and epinephrine... if that tells you anything about the efficacy. Please don't take steroids or epinephrine though :D

So Freddie, what do you taste like? Not that I'm a cannibal or anything. :D

been out in the woods? could be a chigger. they leave a tiny dot in the middle and itch like crazy. think you'd have more bites, tho since only one chigger getting in there isn't likely. whatever it is/was, hope it's gone today. if you find out whodunnit, let us know.

Please don't wait too long to call a doctor if it is getting worse and if it is starting to really hurt. My husband had a very nasty spider bite one year and the ER doctor said he was smart to have gone to ER because that particular type of spider can cause celulitis to occur. He was treated with antibiotics and it got better slowly.

There is also a product called Sting-Ease (availiable at camping stores, etc.) which is an astringent which can help curb the itching and swelling. Can't sayif it's INR safe, but it's a good product.

Hope you are better today.

Marguerite

Thanks everyone, it seems (so far) that the swelling has gone down. It really doesn't feel hot. The red dot is still there and the skin around it is white (skin color), but you can see how far puffyness spread so I guess its sill a tad swollen.
One thing for sure, that benadryl really knocked me out.
Not sure what a chigger is. This happened in my back yard, not in the woods....to many ticks for me thanks.
