I had a-fib following surgery. I was cardioverted 3 times. I was on amiodarone for 3 months following surgery. I also was on coumadin for 2 months. My pulmonary valve was replaced.

porcine valve here, had afib in the hospital a couple times which delayed my going home. Had it a couple times at home afterwards, but never put on any coumadin prior to or after surgery.

I see the porkers and those of the bovine ilk are running neck and neck:

Come'on porkers, time to weigh in! :D

Superbob
(Steel and pig amalgam)

bovine pericardial (Carpentier Edwards)
took coumadin 2 mos post surgery
took an extra day in hospital post-surgery to drain a pleural effusion
no afib or other complications
back in good shape (run/bike/lift) about 6 months after surgery

porcine af

porcine af

had a porcine hancock 11 in feb.......had to go back into hospital for 4 days with af..........not a pleasant exp............was but on adoidarome ok cant spell...............was on it just over 2 month.............af went within a week......................touch wood hasnt come back................feel very good...........but sure is a long haul lol

I have a porcine aorta valve (19mm). I am not on coumadin, could not take it because it would interfere with my Chemo drug (Gleevec) that I take for my leukemia (CML.) Just recently found out this valve is failing. I received in 2004. It's only been four years. This time the surgeon plans to enlarge the opening so he can put in a larger porcine valve.

Glenda..... So sorry to read about your failing valve. I truly feel awful reading this.

I had my second OHS in four years in Februrary. I probably know a little of what you are feeling. If it helps at all, my second time was very much easier on me than the first.

Blessings......

I had the Ross Procedure in Aug 2006. I've had no a-fib and never took coumadin.

As far as I know, everything is still working very well. I feel great. I'll get my 2-yr post-op ECHO later this week. We'll see what it shows. I expect it to show a relatively normal heart and valves. Let's hope so. :)

medtronic mosaic

I've had 3 valve replacement surgeries:

1) 1999 - Ross Procedure
2) 2006 - AVR using Medtronic Mosaic valve and pulmonary homograft after Ross failure
3) 2007 - Pulmonary homograft from 2006 stenosed due to endocarditis. Replaced with another Medtronic Mosaic.

So if I understand this correctly, you have two mosaics; one for the aortic valve and one for the pulmonary?
Thanks for posting!

You are correct. 2 Mosaics. One in the pulmonary and one in the aortic. Last two Surgeries performed at Stanford, by Frank Hanley's team.

I'm confused about the idea that coumadin is used to control afib. I thought coumadin prevented blood clots.

Prior to surgery I used Hawthorn to control afib. It's an alternative to more famous pharmaceutical beta-blockers.

Post surgery I am still taking Hawthorn. (My surgeons other patients take beta-blockers.) I am assuming that eventually we will see if I still need it.

A-Fib can cause Clots to be formed.

Coumadin Prevents Clot Formation (but not necessarily 100%).

Coumadin does NOT control or prevent A-Fib.

Not to change subject ... but --what did your cardio/surgeon say to
you taking the Hawthorn? I take some herbal meds myself, and my cardio
allows me to take it as it is safe , but does your doc have any faith in
its' effectiveness? My herbal PDR and 'Commission E' seems to agree that
it helps reduce cardiac output, and brady - arrhythmias(I usually have
the tachyarrhythmias) Just curious as it seems you and I(maybe others)
are the only ones who use herbal medicines.
Thanks-Dina

sorry to interrupt the thread:eek:

I had a David type valve repair for anascending aortic aneurysm. I had a brief bout of avib while in the hospital, but it went away. I am not taking any meds for that now.

My husband had a bovine valve implanted and he is on amino and coumadin currently. He is almost 8 weeks postop.

I have a medtronics freestyle porcine valve in the aortic position. I had A-fib briefly in the hospital following surgery, and was placed on amioderone for 1 month, I am now off it and am currently taking 1 Lasix that is only temporary, then I will be on nothing. I did not and do not take Coumadin at any time.
