Has anyone had experience with shingles?... I have read what I could on the net but it was unclear about certain things?.I have two questions?.1. Are they contagious? 2. Are there any valve issues to be concerned about?.....Thanks in advance.

My Mom had it during a time when her immune system was suppressed from a kidney transplant. Nasty.
Check out the JGibson thread in Post Surgery...."now I'm dealing with medical issue #3".

It's contagious if someone has never had chicken pox or the chicken pox vaccine. The length of time is usually until the blisters start to crust over. If there are any infants in the family, they would be the most at risk for catching it.
No valve issues that I know of.

I've had limited outbreaks since about 1995.

Thanks for the info....My DW seems to have come down with it.....She started developing a rash while we were on vacation....One of our friends (a nurse) took a look yesterday at the cookout and said she was 99% sure it was shingles....DW is supose to be at the doctor this afternoon getting it checked and treated.

Yep,
and to clarify, I meant that it was possible for someone infected with shingles to give a person who had not had chicken pox, or the chicken pox vaccine, chicken pox. Since you just asked if it was contagious, Cooker, I just gave a basic answer.

Outbreaks are often caused by pressure (as in riding in a car for an extended length of time) so your trip to PA might be responsible.

Now thats a bummer :(

I used Aveeno bath crystals when my son had the pox. It really cut down on the itching and the scaring. He was 13 had them EVERYWHERE.

I never had the chicken pox, so if shingles act the same way as far as the itching goes this Aveeno stuff works really well. A skin specialist recommended it to us.

Be good to your wife and take care.

Good luck and best wishes.

Me!

Hope DW will feel better very soon, Cooker. Hope the shingles aren't as much of an irritation as you must be. :p

I had chicken pox as an adult, and it was the most miserable I have ever felt. The pain of recovering from OHS was less than that of getting over chicken pox. I am hoping shingles will be nothing like that for her.

My 17-year-old daughter had shingles about a month ago. Fortunately, it wasn't a bad case, and was the type that starts on your spine and works its way around your waist on one side only. Hers were starting to go away by the time we got in to see the doctor, so he didn't put her on Zovirax.

Anyway, yes they are contagious to people who haven't had chicken pox, so you have to be careful around pregnant women as chicken pox can cause birth defects.

Thanks everyone....She seems,so far, to have a mild case....More irritation than pain and we hope it stays that way.

LOL...SuperBob again hits the nail on the head :D .....The Chimp can be an irritation from time to time:rolleyes: :D

Hope the case stays mild, Cooker and clears quickly. There is a vaccine for shingles now- don't know much about it.

there is a vaccine for shingles and Medicare is pushing it for older folk.

I had chicken pox - in adulthood also had shingles. You have to have had chicken pox first to contract shingles. that old pox mess causes lots of ailments, doesn't it.

I took the vaccine last Fall. My family doctor prescribed it, but I knew that it wouldn't be covered by insurance. I think I paid $120, but it was worth the peace of mind.
I would encourage anyone who has Medicare coverage for the vaccine to take advantage of it.

Not had any experience with shingles but have heared storys that they are not very nice. Hope your wife as a easy ride and wish you luck that you don't catch them, all the best.
