If you are going to buy a new cage/"crate"/kennel for puppy, you don't want it to be too spacious. If puppy can stand in it and lay (they don't have to stretch in it) down it's a prefect size. Getting one too large......well lets just say your asking for trouble.
If a crate is too large puppies, they will not respect this area as their own and mess it up (if you get my drift).
Good luck with your new family member.

Bubba, I wish you luck too with your new member.

Ah, I do get the "drift," :D , thanks Freddie.

Don't worry, they'll be fine.....just watch them in the beginning. Does the dog like the cat? Animals are pack....they prefer having someone "LIKE THEM" around. We once had two Saint Bernards who "found" abandoned puppies on a cliff overlooking the long Island sound. The female saint used to lick their bellies like a mother would after they ate and then the kittens would sleep under her ears....quite the site.

SUPERBOB Take them both on walks together.....LOOOONNNGGG WALKS. My philosophy is "A GOOD DOG IS A TIRED DOG!!!"

Enjoy them, it's for such a short time.

Yes, for very young (not totally housebroken) pups, choose a medium size.
Since this lab is about 6 mths and growing, it is safe to choose a big cage.

Appreciate it. I've never caged/crated a dog before -- though I guess with a hyperactive young lab coming into the home of a refined lady of a lab, it's the thing to do to keep peace in the family. Probably the first thing I'll do is take Daisy to our great local vet for a checkup, and I'll get him to recommend an exact crate size. Great to have dog folks on here! :)

Bubba, if I've gone and hijacked your thread, SUPERBILLYBOB apologizes. :p :p :D

So Bubba, have you got that dog now to go with your dawgs? :D

My duties as "temporary" keeper of the chocolate lab puppy began tonight and I have never seen so much unbridled energy in my life!

Daisy is 8 months old. I need to get her IDed, spayed, and in a larger crate for sleeping and time outs (I've never been one for crating but I see that with young chocolate labs, they are essential for mental health!

SUPERBOB is for sure going to get plenty of exercise now, between walking Sadie the SUPERDAWG and playing with Daisydawg sufficiently to wear her out. :D

Dog Update.

Dog Update.

Well, the Dachshund is now in the loving arms of a family with kids. The woman?s sister has Dachshunds and knows all about raising them.
The Dog was well behaved while staying with us and even the traitor cat (we have already had a heart-to-heart talk about this!!! ) had begun to PUT UP with having the dog around. As the wife would have to spend most of the time with the dog I left it up to her to decide on what to do with her.

Peggy (my wife) said that she was thankful the dog had showed up when she did. We had indoor dogs just about forever. The last one crossed over the rainbow bridge about 4 years ago after being our companion for 17 faithful years. Peggy said she had just started thinking about maybe getting another indoor dog but having this one for a week made her realize she didn?t miss the tasks of getting up to take the dog out, cleaning up the occasional ?oooops?, watching to keep her from chewing something she shouldn?t and all the NORMAL things involved with inside animals.

Oh, yeah, SuperBob, you are welcome to hijack my thread at any time. I have followed your ?temporary? acquisition of Granddawg with interest. Our Son and his family picked up a Golden Lab puppy the last time they visited us. It was a fur ball of energy while here. They use the ?time out? cage method also. They do have a fenced in yard she is allowed to run in and they take her for walks every day. She replaced one they had recently lost.

May God Bless,

Danny :)

I got my chocolate lab into the house by saying to hubby that I was a foster home until her family got through their divorce......12 years later......she is still happily sleeping and drooling on the sofa.:)

SUPERBOB is finding that it is a lot easier to keep a rambunctious puppy when it's a pretty day outside and she can romp in the backyard to her heart's content. But when it's a dark and gloomy and stormy day like this, dealing with all that pup energy inside the house is a tad hectic. Have to resort to the crate occsionally, but hate to leave her in there very long.

Sounds like someone has a SOFT heart.

Tough love Superbob - have no eye contact while puppy is in the crate and you both will be fine.

Does puppy sleep in the crate for night?? It shouldn't be any different.

Our Papillon is small but lots of energy.. ...I take him for a short walk early..then around 11 A.M...Hubby/I take him with us..and try to walk him hard..Today..like you said, pouring rain..but hubby did the entire Park walk....Both soaked when they got back in car. he was fine..slept..but always ready again for a short walk at 4 P.m...and then a longer walk after dinner..(Hubby takes him for that one)...Remember next weekend ..time changes again..Spring ahead..at least Hubby will not have to take a flashlight.:D ....Bonnie

After a wet day, either it be from snow, rain or mud, all of my dogs went straight into their kennels until they were dry. At one point I had 6 English Setters and 3 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. No not at the same time. I might be crazy but I'm not nuts:D :D :D :D :D
