BAMAMATT

Hello All,

My name is Matt and I'm 34. Next Thursday the 28th, I'll be having aortic valve replacement due to valve insufficiency (bi cuspid). I had my cath Thursday and there were no blockages (still sore from the incision in my groin!). Apparently, I am healthy as a horse if it weren't for this "leaky" valve! I am glad I found this site, I have learned alot reading post from others.
I am getting a mechanical valve ( I don't know what model or anything). I asked the Dr. about the mini sternoctomey??sp. He said he prefers the full, but would do whatever I asked. I guess I don't want to inconvienence him, so I'll elect the full sternum incision. Anyway, just wanted to say hi to everyone and good luck to all!

Matt

Welcome to the VR community, Matt. Sorry for the circumstances but glad you found us. I too was healthy as a horse except a leaky mitral valve.

Best wishes for a successful surgery next week, and a smooth, speedy, recovery.

Welcome aboard Matt.

As a fellow resident of the state of Alabama,
I'm curious as to where you are having your surgery
and with which surgeon if you don't mind sharing that information.

'AL Capshaw' (CABG at HSV Hosp, AVR at UAB)

Thanks Al,

I am having my surgery at Trinity (formerly Montclair). Dr Randleman is my surgeon. I really considered UAB for their reputation, but after asking a nurse who worked in cardiac surgery at both hospitals, she assured me I was in good hands with Dr Randleman. I certainly hope she is right!

Welcome, Matt. I put you on the calendar so now it is official!:D Glad you found us and we look forward to cheering you over this mountain.

Matt,
I also was born with a 'leaky' bicuspid aortic valve, and lucky for me, I was 49 before replacement was necessary. However, I was very surprised to learn that I had an aneurysm on my ascending aorta that also needed to be resected. Many with 'leaky' bicuspid aortic valves also have dilated or aneurysmal ascending aortas or later develop aortic aneurysms even after valve replacement. I'm sure you've read about this, but in case you haven't already found a great source of information on this subject, please see the link below to learn more.

Also, be sure to ask for a CT scan well ahead of your surgery to determine the current size of your ascending aorta. If above 4cm, replacement of your ascending aorta at the same time as AVR is highly recommended to avoid a second surgery later in life. If this is the case, you may want to find an aortic specialist for your surgeon.

With respect to your ticking question, the tick is annoying for awhile but soon becomes a source of comfort, knowing the heart is functioning.

All my best,
MrP

Welcome to the board Matt! I am just a year older than you (35) and will be having the same procedure done for my bicupsid aortic valve on Tuesday the 26th! Best of luck to you on a smooth surgery and very successful recovery!

Welcome Matt,

Prayers for you and other VR members undergoing surgery this week. While surgery is no fun it is a relief to get it over with. All the presurgery stuff (making decisions, scheduling, worrying, etc.) is a real headache(for me it was like an anchor around the neck).Once surgery is over all you have to do is work to heal. You also can be pampered as much as you like.:) Keep us posted.

Welcome Matt...

Welcome Matt...

Welcome to the site Matt! I'm a native Alabamian, but live in TN now. I'm 33 years old and just had my bicuspid aortic valve replaced 12 days ago. I was healthy otherwise...which will certainly help your recovery! I wish you a successful surgery and keep us posted.

And by the way (from an Auburn grad), War Eagle! :D

Take care and God Bless!

Matt,

WELCOME!

GOOD LUCK! Thoughts/prayers coming your way for a SUCCESSFUL surgery :).
