 I REALLY THINK I'M GOING WITH THE ON-X IF I CAN FIND A SURGEON TO DO IT:confused: WHOS HAD THE ON-X AND WOULD THEY LIKE TO SHARE THERE EXPERIENCE WITH ME. ANOTHER THING IS , I CANT GET A STRAIGHT ANSWER FOR THIS QUESTION : I TAKE HYDROCODONE AND OXYCONTIN EVERY DAY FOR A BACK INJURY DO THESE INTERACT WITH COUMADIN.

My surgeon agreed to implant an On-X valve in me, which will be his FIRST. Randy and Alex C were also 'firsts' at Cleveland Clinic and Denver respectively.

I contacted Catheran Burnett (RN/BSN), Manager of Education and Promotion at MCRI (manufacturer of On-X valves). Her contact information is 888 339 8000 ext 265 or [email protected] I expect she knows (or knows of) every surgeon who has implanted an On-X Valve.

She had one of their sales representatives meet with my surgeon, gave him an information package, a CD, and some actual valves to 'see and touch'. He said he would have NO problems implanting their valve.

For information on drug interaction with Coumadin, it would be best to post that question on the Anti-Coagulation Forum which is monitored by our resident Anti-Coagulation Clinic Director, Al Lodwick, a Pharmacist and certified anticoagulation care provider. You could also ask YOUR Pharmacist, and / or check any of the on-line drug information sites.

Good Luck in your quest!

Hi Bulldog

My husband (35) was unable to find a doc here in MN that would use the
On-X valve back in the fall of 2005 (this was at the U of M and Mayo). He fought hard with the docs at the Mayo, and while they would have been happy to offer him a tissue valve, the Ross and On-X were out. Shortly there after, I believe that Randy from our Randy&Robyn was close to having someone at the Mayo possibly give him one, but as mentioned, did get one from Cleveland. Have you tried Abbott?

Nathan was sent home from AVR on Hydrocodone, and I don't remember it affecting his INR, but you could check Al's website to be sure.

Good luck!

Abbott Is Where I'm Going

Abbott Is Where I'm Going

 I WONDER WHY NO ONE IN MINNESOTA IS DOING ON-X.
ABBOTT NORTHWESTERN JUST COMPLETED THIER 300 MILLION DOLLAR HEART ADDITION AND THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO BE ONE STEP AHEAD OF THE ALMIGHTY MAYO AND YET THEY HAVEN'T EVEN HEARD OF THE ON-X AT ABBOTT. I CAN'T AFFORD TO GO OUT OF TOWN I'M SOLD ON THE ON-X AND IF I HAVE TO SETTLE FOR SOMETHING ELSE WELL THATS JUST GONNA SUCK. I'VE BEEN TRYING TO GET INFO FROM THE ON-X PEOPLE FOR OVER 2 WEEKS NOW AND NOTHING. I THOUGHT THIS WAS GOING TO BE THE EASY PART CHOOSING A VALVE. :( :( :(

I can't help w/ your first question, but wanted to mention,if you have back problems, do you get spinal blocks or things like that? I know that can be a little difficult when you are on coum and you have to bridge
I remeber Randy posting about it,
found the thread http://valvereplacement.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15789
You might want to discuss it w/ who manages your back meds, Lyn

Maybe you should send Randy a PM. He may have some ideas to help you. I am sure the surgeons at Abbott have heard of the ON-X. They Mayo knew all about the On-X, they just refused to offer Nathan one. Both his cardio and his surgeon wanted a more "wait and see" approach before committing to them.

I'm more then positive that they have heard and are playing dumb about it. Kind of hard not to hear about any valve in particular let alone On-X. Perhaps they are sponsered by one of the other manufacturers and will promote only their valves. Money has a way of making things work now a days.

Some (many?) hospitals treat valves as "commodities", allowing only a few suppliers (often just 2) for the 'contract period'.

Bottom Line: It's a Bidding War, especially at some of the Biggest Hospitals that we are all familiar with and it's usually the biggest / highest volume manufacturers who win those contracts.

The On-X people should be able to provide informantion on Hospitals that are using their valves. I believe Emory in Atlanta is one of the primary users. Others in NY, Texas, and California but I hate to give names that I'm not sure of. Contact Catheran Burnett and I KNOW she can tell you. (888 339 8000 ext 265)

Maybe if enough Surgeons hear that patients would prefer to take their business elsewhere to get their valve of choice, the surgeons / hospitals will reconsider their positions.

Could you please not use caps lock, it makes it hard to read.

And have you called or emailed On-X people yet and asked them for surgeons in your area ?

If not you may have to pony up and travel to get what you want. After all it's not a new car your looking to buy, it's a life sustaining heart valve.

SORRY I WAS INCORRECT IN MY TYPING CHOICES....
I thought this was a place to learn about and get help with
HEART problems NOT a typing class.

Please don't let little things get to you. He didn't mean anything by it. It's just that all capitals generally indicate shouting and it bothers some folks. It's not a big deal.
