Which procedures?

I have a small question.
What procedures do you need to premedicate for after AVR or any valve surgery?
I have to have small skin cancer removed and called PCP and he said ask
dermatologist....duh...I will already be at the derm and won't have the requisite hour to premed.
What other smaller things is this required for?

My understanding is that any procedure done in a sterile field does not require prophylaxis, so I think you're okay with a dermatologic procedure, but the following link cites the AHA guidelines and explains them a bit:

thanks for the replies....that is what I thought but had to check to be sure.
After my surgery they were adamant about prevention with antibiotics ,
I just wasn't sure where and when.

My husband had endocarditis in July.

We were told by the infectious disease team at the Mayo that pre-medication is required in "any deep venus puncutures lasting longer than 45 minutes" This is not standard protocal however, and some will debate that premedication does a person no good anyway. After seeing my husband battle endocarditis, and the lifelong precautions he has to take as he will now always be at high risk for a recurrance, it is NOT worth it.

I actually talked to the dermatologist about this yesterday.
She said it is a gray area for doctors.
I didn't need any cutting so it was irrelevant but she
said had she needed to cut she would premedicate for anyone less
than two years out of AVR. She would consider the others individually but
said she usually would premed cause "why take a chance"
I agreed with her completely.
