Hi all, after my surgery my surgeon told me he was able to get a larger mechanical valve in. Why is a larger valve better?

Google Patient Prosthesis Mismatch (PPM) and you'll find quite a bit on the subject. Poor valve sizing can result in higher mortality.

clumsydancer: My understanding is that there is one size that is the proper size for each patient's heart. I was told that my heart was large enough that I could receive a larger ON-X valve.
So it is my understanding that the my ejection fraction went from 45 pre-surgery to 60 post-surgery in part because of the increased pumping capacity of my 25 mm ON-X valve. My native valve was truly a mess. So, having a normal functioning valve
had a lot to do with it as well.
