I have walked with my bad hip to the point that I can't function. Since the valve replacement, am I doomed to wheel chair. Is a hip replacement out of the question? Are there any options? HELP

Heck no it's not out of the question. Maryka is having hers done next month. Why would you think your doomed to a wheel chair? We have the technology, we can rebuild you. Better, faster, stronger............

By all means, I'm with the others in saying unless there is something about your particular condition, warfarin and prosthetic valve should not preclude you from hip replacement. Please find excellent physicians and surgeons with whom to consult and all things being equal, you well could get on with getting your replacement.

Good luck.

Well, I am not getting a bionic eye! But I do hope to get my right hip replaced in August. (Ross did not tell you that he too has had a hip replaced.) You have to "bridge" your anticoagulants. Is your hip so badly deteriorated now that a doctor has said it is impossible? I have learned that the earlier the replacement, the easier the replacement. However, if I were you I would ask another doctor if one turned you away. By the way, Welcome to VR!

Valve replacement most certainly does not doom you to a wheelchair, even if you have orthopedic problems. I have two bad knees -- and have had surgery on one 3 years after my heart surgery, and have discussed future need for a replacement -- and the VR is no obstacle to that. I continue to walk and work out. Rather than closing doors, valve replacement opens them.

Thanks for the info on hip replacement. I was ready to give up my job and get in that wheelchair. I went to doc got xrays and looking for a orthapedic specialist. I live in Pa. work in Md. Any recommendations? Maryka you will be in my thoughts. I wish I knew about this org when my valve was done. I just love reading about everything. Thanks again Rubus

Any ortho that's done quite a few of these will do. It's not fun, but in the end, it's so worth not being in pain anymore. I got to the point that I couldn't walk and just moving or jarring it had me in tears. That was in 99. I've been pain free since, well, except for when damp weather passes by, I feel it then, but nothing terrible.

Which part of Pa? I'm thinking south east if you work in Md, thats quite a hike (we live in Camden country NJ) one of the newer members here has a site like this for hip surgery, I think it is Pat.

Hey Lyn Live in Spring Grove near York Pa takes hour and half drive my insurance will cover Md or Pa looking for ortho in York Hosp or Union Memorial Hosp I'm really getting encouraged. THANKS
