Guest Blog: “Scarless Heart Valve Surgery For Women” By Dr. Giovanni Ciuffo

Earlier this week, I spoke with Dr. Giovanni Ciuffo, a minimally invasive and bloodless heart surgery specialist, at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. (As you may remember, Dr. Ciuffo wrote “Aortic Stenosis… The Neglected Child”.) Dr. Giovanni Ciuffo, Heart Surgeon, Mount Sinai Hospital During our discussion, Dr. Ciuffo shared several clinical insights about traditional, median sternotomy [...]

in addition, most of us know that dr. stelzer is a magnificent surgeon. he did my husband, joey's rp almost 9 years ago. this gentleman also wants to know if anyone knows if dr. stelzer is also known to be a great surgeon for simple valve replacements (vs. ross, which he is known for).

i told him that i thought dr. stelzer was a great surgeon either way_ ross or avr. just thought i'd give him some further confirmation.
thanks so much for your help. maybe if we get a few replies i can refer him to the thread and lure him in here!!!

be well all,
sylvia

Sylvia, I feel certain that you have told your acquaintance that we are a reasonably accepting bunch here in VR and hardly ever force people into stocks in the public square. It sounds more like his anxiety is speaking rather than logic. Perhaps there is someone who can speak about Dr. Ciuffo but as you know there are many other first rate surgeons. My own experience is that there a real benefit to using a surgeon in your own area with an excellent reputation and with whom you can speak when necessary. As well, having a surgeon who relates well with his patients and with whom you can actually have a conversation is extremely reassuring. It sounds as though this may describe your own experience. I cannot imagine, however, why anyone might suspect a surgeon who performs RP less qualified for a single valve AVR, in fact, I would think just the opposite.

Reassure your friend that we have all been through the same experience and understand in the most intimate fashion the concerns and fears of approaching surgery. There is real benefit from hearing things more than once from knowledgeable compassionate people. That reassurance is sort of the essence of VR.

Can't say that I have, but tell him to come on over. I'm the only that bites here and I've had all my teeth removed, so he should be fine.

I was not a candidate for minimally invasive surgery (I did ask, just for the heck of it). Mount Sinai is an excellent hospital, I myself was very lucky to have Dr. David Adams and Dr. DiLuozzo, as well as the highly respected team. I still go to Mount Sinai for my visits to my cardiologist, who I chose after my operation. I highly recommend Mount Sinai.

yes, phillip, that's the one. i hear he's not very well liked here. my friend is registering and will be on soon to ask for himself. he's a lovely man and will be a great addition to this family. he'll tell more, i'm sure.

Hopefully, as your friend seeks information, he'll be able to get whatever he needs from multiple sources. I've never looked at Adam's blog so you'll not hear any negative comments from me about it.
