Wise, that's great news that she's doing a little better. She sounds like a tough lady, wanting to continue to work and all. I'll continue to keep her in my thoughts and prayers.

My Aunt Shirley has taken a turn for the worse in the last week or so. She is so burned inside and out from radiation treatments and is in tremendous pain. She was in the hospital for dehydration and released about a week ago. She has swollen so much in the legs and ankles; they gave her lasix but it didn't help much. None of her doctors have been willing to tell my mother anything. The poor woman has been suffering and no one seems to think that anything should be done. Honestly, she looks like she is dying. My mother drove her to the ER about two hours ago; they're giving her an IV for pain thank God. Earlier today mom talked to her GP; he said the ER couldn't do anything for her. We're like...huh?...somebody needs to do something. Thanks for your prayers before and I'm asking again. Don't ever get ill in Frankfort, Kentucky is all I can say right now. We had a trip planned to Georgia to see the grand kids; we just returned earler this evening. I was very reluctant to leave, but my mother insisted. I'm going to rest tonight, then off to the hospital again. Sorry for the whining, but thanks for the prayers.

There is not much I can add to all the posting except that my prayers are going your way. Sometimes it is difficult for an independent person to accept help, but that does not mean they don't welcome it. Just be there and do whatever you can. As ohter have said, make sure she follows the doctor's orders and stays away from possible causes of infection. I also had low blood counts while getting chemo....thank GOD this was over 25 years ago....so keep your faith

Pain is so horrible; I am so sorry for her. She is in my prayers.

Those ERs can be awful. When my mother was in such pain, the dr wanted to send her home - and I said NO. He said "I'll call her primary" and I said, let me talk to him and he'll admit her. He did. I was so angry that they would want to send such an ill person home with such pain. How in the world were WE supposed to take care of her in that condition! Sounds like maybe she needs a new and different doctor. There's always something that can be done.

Big time. As far as I can tell, the man has done nothing to help her. I don't understand how a doctor can be so unconcerned.

Wise-

I am so sorry to read about this turn of events. Sounds like abysmal care. Could she have developed lymphedema in her legs and ankles? People who have lots of radiation can sometimes get that and even some surgeries can cause it.

Wise, there's not much I can say that hasn't already been said. I pray for God's will for your aunt. She sounds like a very special lady. Hugs and prayers are coming you way.

Thanks all for the prayers.

Nancy, lymphedema does seem like a possibility. That does seem some better today. Yes, abysmal care is a certainty; I'm learning that if you have someone in the hospital they need someone there to make sure they're taken care of. Her radiology doctor (whatever that is called), could be sued for literally cooking this poor woman. Most of her skin on her bottom and inner thighs and elsewhere is gone. I'm shocked that they continued to administer radiation treatments to her. Her GP told my mother yesterday that my aunt should refuse any further treatments; I fear that may have happened too late.

I certainly hope they are treating her radiation burns! There are medications for that. Unfortunately, there is a set course of radiation treatments to get at the cancer, and some people's skin starts to break down near the end.

Once she gets over her serious problems, perhaps she could get a consult with a Physical Therapist who specializes in lymphedema. They can at least try to minimize the swelling so it doesn't get out of hand. There is special massage therapy and wraps that are used, along with compression garments.

For some reason, doctors don't do much, or know too much (don't know which, maybe both) for women with lymphedema. It really, really stinks!!!

Wound specialists have been ordered by the radiologist. They didn't come today though.

Unfortunately my aunt couldn't even finish her treatments before she got in such bad shape from the burns. Nancy your explanation about the burns helps; I guess either the cancer is eradicated by the radiation or the radiation causes more immediate problems.

The oncologist came in this evening and told us that she is very ill. They're giving her injections to hopefully bring up her blood count. She said that we can only hope for the best. If she makes it past this hurdle, I'm going to talk to them about lymphedema.

I'll make this post short. My aunt has a blood infection now. Her hospital care is still so-so. I'm exhausted and turned my car into a lane going the wrong direction; no one else was there thankfully. Thanks for your prayers; we really do appreciate it.

Checking in and following closely, with prayers.

I did that wrong way one way thing in DOWNTOWN Baltimore one time. I got lucky, too. All 4 lanes of cars a block in front of me, all facing me, were stopped at a red light. I was able to get to the end of the block, pull off and have my heart attack in peace.

Certainly!

Certainly!

You can count on ours. I do hope the docs are treating the infection aggressively. I lost my dear sister to cerical cancer. I think the chemo and radiation is what really did her in, more so than the cancer.....................and that was at MD Anderson..............so I think it's a crapshoot no matter where you are. You have our love and prayers................and please try and get some sleep. We don't need you on your deathbed as well. Many hugs. Janet
