I've written this 3 different ways and it is hard to follow...so I am making a timeline this time....Hope this simplifies things....

OHS...April 06

Two Pleural Effusions...post OHS....May 06 *Lupus was diagnosed from lung fluid*

Removal of Paratid Gland - Lymphoma diagnosis .... July 06

Chemo Port Surgery August 06 *Kidney function showed up for first time as being a concern

Chemo - August 06- November 06

I will just go ahead and write it cause I am thinking it...06 sucked!

April 08 Pre-op (knee surgery) blood work showing kidney function issues aga in.......47% filtration....high BUN and creatine levels...

Kidney Specialist appt this Thursday.....

My question....I saw a tv commercial for the first time this weekend....it says simply "If you have had Open Heart Surgery and then diagnosed with kidney problems and dialysis........Supposedly there is a link between some drug used during open heart surgery and kidney....DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE ISSUES WITH THEIR KIDNEYS POST OHS????

I may not have any symptoms of Lupus, but in the back of my mind I am worrying myself silly that my kidney issue is indeed related to lupus. Now when I saw that commerical.... I was just wondering if this is ohs related.

Still fighting!

Trasylol lawsuits. Does anyone know if they were given this drug during surgery? It appears that the lawsuits are for CABG patients, but I question whether the drug is used in all heart surgery.

I've had issues with my kidneys ever since my AVR in 2002.

Hi Debbi! My mom's kidneys took a big hit at the time of her OHS-she waited too long to have it done and her body started shutting down. I remember praying hard for her to start peeing!!! She did thank God and still sees a kidney specialist to keep tabs on her. Mom has high BUN and creatine levels too. Please keep us posted on your appt! Best wishes:) Deb

Hi Debbi,
I to have had problems with my kidneys. Not right after my heart surgery it was about a year and a half later. They told me I had Iga Nepheophy. I pulled out if it just recently took pedizone for 4 months. Have to see the kidney specialists from now on. He checks how I'm doing and blood work & urine sample. He said I could come up with it again it never really leaves your system.
He never mention due to heart surgery or anything like that. Keep us informed with your information on whats happening.

my husband is 6 months out since his ohs, aorta valve and root replacement and anuerysm. Since Jan. before any ace inhib meds his creatinine jumped from .09 to 1.3. He has had it test again in May and his still 1.3 bun is 14. Don't know if this is an after shock from surgery or what. I,ve read that elevated creatinie can indicate kidney failure, his gp and cardioligist don,t seem to concerned at this time. Has another test next week, hope it is at least stable.

I'm not sure if the problematic kidney issues can occur immediately following the med administration/OHS surgery...
...Or if they are a possible complication that can occur at some unknown later date. That might be a specific direction to research in connection to your question.

I'm pretty curious about this subject. How do they keep the kidneys from failing? I read something somewhere about a new technique (i don't have a clue what it is) that protects the kidneys and basically there's less than 1% chance of kidney failure during OHS now.
