Hi all, here's a good question. They thought I had a bicuspid valve, but when they went in found a huge hole (dime sized) in one of my leaflets. Has anyone ever heard of this?
Nate: I found this reference on line- the section in bold type should interest you.
"Aortic regurgitation is usually caused by thickening and calcification of the valve
leaflets as they age. Some valves are affected by a chronic inflammatory
process that leads to thickening and retraction of the leaflets (rheumatic heart
disease, ankylosing spondylitis). Some valves leak because an infection (bacterialendocarditis) eats a hole into the valve leaflets. Some valves leak because the aorta becomes dilated thus stretching the valve leaflets apart."
