Greetings!! I'm up 1/2 pound this week. I'll take that as I have had a treat or two:biggrin2: I'm ready for some cooler weather!!! Sorry I have not contributed much this past week but work is crazy!!!

How has your week gone? I hope you have made headway in the battle of the bulge!!!!

Have a great week!!!

2013 Starting Weight: 231
Last Weigh In : 223.25
Todays Weight: 223.75
YTD: 7.25

I'm trying to find my way back. I'm beginning to recover from the pinched nerve I suffered about 10 days ago. Still have a visit with my internist next week and probably a referral to a specialist for some physical therapy, and maybe some recommendations for exercises to help minimize recurrence. I have also found out that I have developed arthritis in my neck and spine -- not fun, especially when I have to drive my car backward down a narrow 120-foot driveway between two houses to put it in the garage!

I'm doing OK on the weight battle, pretty much on-track.

Beginning of the year: 164.6

2 Weeks ago (last weigh-in): 157.2

Today: 156.2

YTD: -8.4

While I still would like to lose another pound or so, I hope I can at least keep the progress I've made so far.

SB - I don't think I'll try the PB/catsup/onion confection, but I do remember an old-country recipe my mom used to make for us. This was a Polish-Yiddish concoction that was made of diced yellow onion, diced hard-boiled eggs and held together with rendered chicken fat (in Yiddish, the chicken fat is known as schmaltz). Add salt and pepper to taste, and you have what we called "Jewish egg salad." Served cold as a sandwich on a fresh bagel or kaiser roll. Add lettuce if you want some added crunch. Not to be eaten when one was in close proximity with new acquaintances, I'm sure!

Knowing what we now know, I wouldn't eat this at all. Just think of all the fat consumed in this and other old-country recipes and you have an idea why our grandparents died young. . .

Seems that we're all hanging in there with our fitness plans as best we can, no matter the adversity or temptations.

BionicBob, aka The Yo-Yo King, is somehow 3.1 pounds lighter than he was this time last week when he was so thoroughly disgusted with himself. Have been exercising a lot, while doing best not to give in too much to cravings (like peanut butter-based delicacies). :biggrin2:

That 3.1 isn't straight-line progress, however. It just means I am back in my target zone for 2013 but not as far down into it as I was. Down 5.1 pounds for year. Want to lose a few more, maintain, then set new goals for 2014.

Good luck to all.

I'm reporting a 3 pound gain from the last time I weighed which was two weeks ago. It's not good, but it's better than what the scales read the first day home from vacation. There's no pie left to be eaten (yes, we did transport two fabulous cranberry/apple pies 710 miles home with us) so hopefully I'm on the right track.
Last Weigh In: 147
This Week: 150
Gain: 3

I'm in the same place. up and down 1/2 lb.
Foster dog got snipped yesterday, and goes to his first adoptathon on Saturday. I hope we find him a good home, and soon. There are others I'd like to foster, more than this one.
I'm so busy at work, I don't have time for the midday walk. Of course Foster dog takes care of that omission, because we are walking Jet and him every evening (on top of my A.M. workout, and DH's morning dog walk).

Can I officially join your throw down? As a lurker, I have already been motivated by this group!

My story: I met with my cardiologist for the first time in early March. In addition to the BAV that had progressed from moderate to severe regurgitation, he was concerned about my weight. He included "overweight" as part of my diagnosis.

By late March, he recommended surgery. I was already losing weight by cutting out snacks.

At my pre-OP physical in early June, I had lost 7 pounds since early March.

By the time I came home from the hospital 4 nights later, I had lost another 7 pounds. Yes, the hospital food was truly bad and I had no appetite, but I never felt like I "earned" this loss.

At 14 weeks post-OP, my life is more or less back to normal. I'm actually exercising a bit more on those days I can make it to Cariac Rehab. I am also walking or jogging 6 days per week, up from 5 pre-surgery.

With my weigh in this morning, I have lost 20 pounds since March. If I lose another 10 pounds, I will no longer be overweight based on BMI, but I would be pretty happy just maintaining my current weight. BMI never seemed to be that meaningful for me because my waist to hip ratio has always been low.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to joining in each week! -- Suzanne

Suzanne -- We are delighted that you have joined our merry band of Throwdowners. I can see that you will be a real inspiration to us. Sounds like you are very determined and doing well with your program. We will benefit from following your progress. Some of us are several years post-op (8 1/2 years for me) and have been checking in weekly with the Throwdown for all these years. We kid around sometimes, but deep down we are serious about our pursuit of fitness.

BTW, I saw some recent respected research indicating that BMI is NOT an accurate measurement, and some more accurate measure is needed. I wrote about it in my blog, found at steadfastdawgwalker.com.... I can send you the link to it, if you like.

Again, WELCOME!

Suzanne, welcome aboard! Glad you have decided to join us in our quest for a smaller us:biggrin2: BMI means little to me as well. I just want to feel comfortable with my weight and in my clothes. Sounds like you might be exercising more than all of us combined, good for you!!!

I look forward to hearing about your progress:thumbup:

Thanks to everyone for the welcome!

Superbob, thank you for the link to your blog. Your dog-- Sadie?-- is gorgeous. Sounds like she has been a great companion to you for many years. We were between dogs for many years but were adopted by a Mini Australian Shepherd about 2 years ago. She is the light of our lives and leaving her made travelling for OHS much harder. Her name is also Sadie.

I bet Sadie was glad to see you when you got home. My Sadie stayed beside me for weeks and weeks, and seemed to understand that I couldn't do our regular outdoor walks with her on a leash for a while. I think if I added every mile we've walked it would approach 10,000. We rarely miss a day, and we did two a days for many years.

Hi, Suzanne, and welcome! I'm glad you've decided to join us - expecially since you've actually been a "member" for a while but just didn't tell the rest of us.

I share the general skepticism (sp?) regarding BMI as a measure of healthy weight. Most of my life I was a short, wiry and in my younger days, muscular guy. My BMI was always borderline, almost overweight - but for me much of my weight was bones and muscle. BMI does not take into consideration very fit people. It was, in fact, never designed for use in evaluating individual people. It was developed as a means by which to evaluate large population groups, to compare different regions or countries. It was easy to calculate, so docs decided they would appropriate it for individual use.

Now I find, in my mid-60's, that my BMI says I am at the top end of the healthy range for my height. I'm OK with that - I feel better than I have for years and my clothes fit well enough to hide some of my age. That works for me!

This thread has been penalized 15 yards for insufficient banter. :tongue2:

Confession: I mostly hate BMI 'cause I am a big boy carrying extra weight. But still, and honestly, some medical experts are saying it's very much an inexact gauge.

TMI?

You folks are solving the problems of the world and I'm stuck here trying to get over the back issues I had a couple of weeks ago (diagnosed as a pinched nerve). Saw my internist yesterday and he basically said "well, it happens as you get older when you have arthritis." At least he referred me to a physical therapist for a couple of sessions to perhaps learn some exercises and stretching techniques to help minimize recurrence.

Getting older is a pain (literally), but it still beats the alternative!
