    My upcoming surgery--words of wisdom?

The biggest thing to realize is that this is an amazing process. To have someone rooting around in us like this surgery requires and then have us wake up a few hours later is just a wonderful thing. Recovery, at first, will seem to take forever but I am 4 months out and I am walking the hills...

A new member of the AVR club

Hi Jon, Welcome to the club. I haven't had a chance to catch up on all the recent posts in the forum, so forgive if I am repeating something here. This site really helped me before and after my surgery. Feel free to share at any time. And remember asking for advice is just as important as...

    Pumphead?

I am with Johan in that I can get off a little lightly and I have explained it to my family so they understand somewhat. And the family is starting to realize that something is different. For example, I am not reading as much because my attention span is just not back to where it used to be...

What are we doing this week? April 25 - May 1

I am back from San Fran and had a good time judging myself on the hills. This last weekend and during the evenings I spent a lot of time in the orchard and had a good time there. Probably not a whole lot of aerobic exercise, but again, I wasn't begging for oxygen. I will be on the road for...

When is it safe after surgery to start.....?

Ok, who ever is the resident artist, please draw Ross and Bina a picture. If we don't have a resident artist will somebody put a fire hose on them?

    Plavix vs Warfarin side effects

My plan provides 90 days of warfarin for $2.00. The Sams Club advertises Plavix at $160 per 30. About the only advantage of Plavix that I can think of is it has to taste better than the warfarin. I have had it stick a couple of times and it is the nastiest stuff!

    Streets of San Francisco

I remember the small steps. I used to run cross county in high school and college. Our team won on the hills because we knew how to attack them. BTW, I will wave "hey" when we go past Vancouver. We are going to take an Inside Passage Cruise out of Seattle in May.

    Dumb Question?

Rhuematic Fever can damage the heart right away. My best friend in sixth grade caught the fever and returned to school several months later with a brand new valve.

    Streets of San Francisco

I am in San Francisco for the week and I am walking back to the hotel from the office. I don't know if I am going to get a chance to test one of the big hills, but I did walk over a "small" hill (pretty decent sized for a flat lander) this afternoon and walked almost 2 miles. I was breathing a...

Heart rate when exercising post AVR

Hello Ade, did you attend any rehab sessions? If so, what was your HR in rehab? My beta blockers keep my rate below 125.

    Rehab and METS

Thanks Karl, I will check it out. I don't ride a bike, we can't where we live. Our roads are made more for motocross. Next week I will be in a Hilton in San Francisco so I will have access to half way decent equipment, but the week after I am on my own. From what I understand, the Y in this...

    Post Surgery Shortness of Breath

It took me a month or so before I was not feeling the SOB, but it was not constant for me. I had to spend a lot of time in the recliner. Ross, you are right about the A-Fib. When I was still in the hospital I had no clue why they were waking me up in the middle of the night. n Of course it...

Help and advice wanted about post surgery aches

I believe in the power of Omega-3 and fish oil, but I am going to drag this back to exercise for a little bit. I, too, have pain, but it is because I am pushing myself harder each session. Typically, my legs hurt more than anything else because the machines concentrated on the legs. I just...

    Airport X-ray

I just flew again this week and had no problems with the magnetometers. And, it is kind of nice to be able to fly and not have my ankles end up 3 - 4 times their normal size.

    Airport X-ray

I flew for the first time, since surgery, a couple of weeks ago. I did not have any problems with my valve.

    Spring Racing Season

I don't know how much studying you have done on it, but resistance training was a critical part of the training routine when I ran distance in high school and college. We spent 2 - 3 hours in the weight room each week. The idea of was to do more reps and less weight. This helped avoid bulking...

    Rehab and METS

Jeanie, My nurses check the RPE for each machine and that is used for part of the prescription. If I am working at 11, they typically ask if I am ready for the next level. For example, one of the nurses asked if I was ready for the 2.5% elevation on the treadmill. I bumped it up and told...

    Strange OHS Stories?

After my AVR, nothing. But, I did have a "vision" when I had my MI in '96. My heart stopped in the ER and sometime before they revived me I had the experience. I might describe it someday, but I will say I did not hurt anymore, at least until they revived me.
