What is it like taking coumadin?

I appreciate your concern. It is a scary step to take into the unknown. It has been my experience that most "medical" people will know less than you do about being on anticoagulants after you have been managing them for awhile. Lots of misinformation amongst that group. Here are my answers...

    Missed dose . . . I think

Thanks for all your input. I took the half dose and was back in range on Friday. I still don't know if I skipped it or not:confused::o;)

    Missed dose . . . I think

I got up this morning to take my morning pills BP, beta blocker, and Plavix, I noticed that last night's dose of of warfarin and beta blocker were still there. I went ahead and took it (12hours late) then I noticed that tonight's dose of warfarin and beta blocker were gone. The behavior of my...

    Natasha Richardson

Freak accident Freak accident This is such a sad case of something that only happens in one to three percent of head injuries and of those, only 15-20% result in death. I snowboard and started wearing a helmet after my surgery (my wife made me:rolleyes:). I have learned that I need to just...

    Thumping won't go away

Yes I notice it also. I attribute it to the fact that the mechanical valve "slams" shut as apposed to a tissue valve that would close softly. If I can hear it or feel it it means just one thing. . . I am still alive:D and that's good!

Poll: Do you take asprin or Plavix

I would like to know of those of you who take anti-platelet medication which you take. Thanks.

Can I still Sneak Up On Folks?

My daughter has very good ears and can hear me ticking if the room is fairly quiet from a few feet away. She will say, "stop ticking"! I tell her that that is not a real good idea! I can hear it when it is perfectly quiet and actually find it comforting, sort of like a wind chime:D

    Clot

Hey everyone! I am not an avid "poster", but I check the forum every once in a while to see what's new. I had an "event" about a month ago that I thought I would share for what it might be worth to someone. I woke up one morning and had a blind spot in my left eye. I get the gray...

    hiking advice

Fellow Backpacker Fellow Backpacker Wes, I went on my high altitude backpacking trip (camped at 9,000ft. hiked to 10,500ft.) about 13 months after surgery. I am 50 and I could have gone sooner, but I am glad that I waited a few extra months. I would err on the the safe side and definitely...

It's Spring and INR's are falling??

I have to agree with the nurse. Ask any rancher an he will tell you that the spring grass has more nutrients for the cattle than the rest of the year. I grow a garden and I know that fresh vegetables, especially in the spring, have more vitamins. I recently had to adjust my warfarin up to...

    Bleeds???

Saline spray is my BEST friend. I have less nose bleeds now than I did BEFORE my surgery! You can use it as much as you like. I have heard some negative things about chronic Vasaline use in the nose. This quote is from Wikipedia about petroleum jelly: "It may immobilize the cilia in the...

    Aspercream

Are topical ointments containing salicylate or aspirin OK to use for muscle pain, etc. without affecting INR too much?

    Hail Caesar!

If I ate a big Caesar salad in the evening and then tested in the next morning, how much should I expect my INR to drop from, let's say 2.4? I know to dose the diet, but I like playing with my food:D (probably since my mother always told me not too!)

    InRatio Test Strips

Yes I did. I try to be very meticulous about my testing. I track my testing on a spreadsheet including the test strip numbers. I have been very consistent in my Lab results.

    InRatio Test Strips

I just started a new box of test strips and they are reading noticeably lower than the last batch which was high compared to the lab (the Lab ran about 78% of the InRatio). I haven't compare this current batch of strips with the lab, to see how they measure up. Have any of you had similar...
