Thanks for stopping. I thought this forum was a place to come to get/share info related to valvular heart disease and the like, not to read about ones political banter/rhetoric?

It is a forum for heart valve issues. But as this is the Off - Topic forum you may find a bit of anything.

I always respected Benjamin Franklin, I'd really like a couple of kilos of those...
Same here. The Franklin institute in Philadelphia a few years ago....

Great place. Went there a lot as a kid. Fascinating stuff. I'm out of touch now though, hope it is still there. I think they tried to commercialize it though. Renamed it "The Franklin" or some such thing make it sound less scientific and try to attract turn it into an entertainment venue of some kind a few years ago (I think that caused and uproar and they then put the word Insititute BACk in the name?).

Actually last time I was there it was to see the first Star Trek reboot movie. If Ben were alive he'd be spinning in his grave. Or maybe not, maybe he would dig the exploits of Capt Kirk & Co.

If you bother to listen, they are all around you, and within their world view they are as rational as you believe you are.

Oh, I do listen and in my county, believe me, they are all around me. Just as they are clearly all around you in Missouri. But, just because they believe that they are right in their thinking, does not make it so. They may believe the false dichotomy that would say that one has to choose between faith in God and the vaccine, which you speak about, but because they believe this and believe that they are rational, does not make it clear headed thinking. It's foolishness and a false dichotomy. There is no reason that faith in God and Covid precautions need to be mutually exclusive.
I know two folks in my circle who believe, with all their heart, that the moon landing was faked. They think themselves critical thinkers and believe that they know something that others don't. They can believe this all they want, but it does not make it so.

Of course they believe that they are rational. Of course they think that they know better than those who have a lifetime of study in epidemiology and virology. This is exactly what the Dunning & Kruger Effect has shown us.

There is the problem they think themselves ... but that's the Dunning Kruger central point: inability to properly self evaluate. I know in the modern world that it may seem strange, but when I went to school, someone else evaluated my ability, I didn't score myself and give myself an award.

Now a days it seems everyone thinks their evaluation of themselves is sufficient justification for being right.

By that basis we should all be surgeons, I mean if we thought we should be.

Handsome young man!
Thanks! Although in a few months he'll be 15 and he's grown to about twice that size it seems so doesn't look quite the same as that picture, still handsome though. I'm a bit biased but it does seem like the girls are taking a liking to him but not sure I'm ready for all that ....

I think he'd dig it. The last time I was there was 2017. Haven't been in the city much lately although I had the pleasure.../s of driving through I-95 rush hour on an airport run yesterday.. It's still called the Franklin institute, I think what you are referring to was just a marketing campaign.

They really DID change the name, or at least tried to, removed the word "Institute". It was crazy. Yes, it was a marketing campaign, but one built around giving it a new "trendy" name. Just found some articles on it. Happened in like 2008 then changed back in 2009.

Well, as long people believe that they are qualified, and as long as they "feel" that they are smart,
Qualification is now available for the people who know they are competent and capable but just don't have time to do the qualifications

This reminds me of a University that I know of. The Embassy University, located in Florida.

How you would like to meditate your way to a degree? PhD anyone? No problem, just stay with the program long enough.

You can't make this stuff up:

"7. The length of each semester:
“How long are the semesters?”

Answer:
Embassy does not operate on semesters because our lives are not divided into semesters. It is measured by years. Two years of nightly meditation will result in an Associate of Arts degree. Two more years will bring you a Bachelor of Arts degree. Another two years will earn you a Master of Arts degree and the final three years will produce a Doctor of Philosophy degree. "

This guy founded an organization who offered a homeschool curriculum and I know a few families who actually bought into his stuff. Absolute garbage- their kids ended up with a worthless education.

I've pretty much bailed out on this thread, but wanted to dip back in for some observations. The market is beginning to make its preferences known.
- Kaiser Family Foundation study has indicated that major insurers are ending waivers on out-of-pocket Covid treatments.
- I need to be somewhat circumspect about the details, but I am personally familiar with two small businesses (< 25 employees) who had strident anti-vaxxers come down with Covid **and not tell anyone**, **and continue to work** until they became substantially debilitated. Significant numbers of vaxxed staff now have to miss work due to quarantine and have informed the company owner that they will not work the same shifts w/ those people (if they come back) w/o proof of vaccination.

I think that in certain labor markets, this will be the trend. Needless to say, I'm in favor of both items.

Such strange times that we live in. People watch a few videos that their social media algorithms present to them and they think that they know more than experts who have dedicated their entire lifetimes to studying epidemiology and virology. Dunning Kruger on steroids.
