What do radio stations NOT play enough?

I guess the first question should be:
Do you listen to radio much anymore?

With the advent of CDs, satellite radio, iPODS, etc., virtually everyone can create their very own radio station, personalized with no commercials. This means that the "basic" radio stations, especially those that have to air a lot of commercials, are losing listeners.

For me, one who loves radio, that is kind of sad...especially since it is kinda cool to hear an older song on the radio that brings back memories, even if the whole world has forgotten. Yeah, it's cool to hear it on the iPOD, too, but when you hear it on the radio, you KNOW you aren't the only one hearing it at that given time....

So ... for those that listen to radio, what do radio stations NOT play enough of?

Personally, the more mix the better ... and, yes, that even includes mixing genres (as I did on my radio shows). The lines between, say country and rock, are not as definitive as they once were. I remember in the mid-1990s, when I had my radio show in college, I played Michael Martin Murphy's "Still Taking Chances" ... a song from the 1980s ... and I had a few people call me to find out more about that "new song" and "new artist"....

I don't listen to the radio a whole lot because I drive 22 miles each way to work and I enjoy audio books. When I do listen, I enjoy KSBJ - a local Christian station - that is listener supported. It has no true commercials, although there are a few notes from sponsors. There is also a station that plays songs from the 70's, 80's, and 90's that I enjoy and it's quite a mix. It's not uncommon to hear the Eagles followed by Cyndi Lauper followed by Devo followed by early Britney followed by KC and the Sunshine Band. I just can't seem to get enough of "That's the way, uh huh uh huh, I like it, uh huh, uh huh!" LOL! With the choice in stations here, I think everyone can hear what they want. My husband listens to what I call Commie Talk Radio - Limbaugh, etc. I'm a conservative, but some of the people on those shows are way too much into wacko conspiracy theories for me!

The thing that I can't seem to find is a decent morning show. So many of them are disgusting - language and topics. Yes, I'm showing my age!

Chicago

Chicago

My local station retired their good morning show, and got two that I call Dumb and Dumber; I refuse to listen to them. So I've been searching all over for a replacement station. I found one that played some Chicago, and I realized that the old station rarely if ever played Chicago. Maybe it's a DEtroit thing.

I like to hear fun songs like, She wore an itsy bitsy tinnie winnie poke a dot binkini, one eye one horn purple people earer or a song from Weird Al

no radio, never again. (of course it helped living in sw texas in an area where there
was no radio reception!) when i worked elsewheres i got so fed up with the damned
'morning shows' that i just pulled the radio out of the truck, put in a dedicated (old)
cd player.

morning shows are just soooooooooo stupid! i want news, weather, and traffic on
one station, and music on another. i don't need a pair of jerk-offs telling bad jokes
and playing sound effects. they're not my friends. just go away.

and sadly, tv news is doing the same garbage. crappy morning shows, and running
bad jokes throughout the broadcast during the day. do i really need to know that
the bbc weatherman wears fuzzy long underwear?

Hey I remember "Still Taking Chances." That's a side note, but I do remember it.

I don't think radio stations play enough GOOD music. Even the oldies they play these days are limited in variety.

A few minutes of news is enough for me; by then I need something more positive. :)

I only listen when driving uptown - that takes about 8-10 minutes. durig that time I can catch up on local news. My area is a town of about 7000 people (it's grown by 5000 since I moved here) and we all know each other or somebody in the family so it's a family type radio station. We have a country store where people call in if they want to buy something or have something to sell, leave their phone numbers and make deals on their own. It's on every weekday for half an hour. Fun.

We listen whenever we're in the car or van driving locally. For trips, it's usually cd's or books on tape. As far as radio, we love the "oldies".....songs from the 50's through the 70's, country, npr, light classical when we're driving, and any local station that gives weather and road conditions.......there ya go.

The only time we listen to radio is while driving.

Basically the same for me. If I'm at home, it's CDs or listening to music online.

Course, I love listening to the radio on road trips ... to hear the "local" flavor in the radio stations....

Hey I remember "Still Taking Chances." That's a side note, but I do remember it.

COOL! I wondered if anyone would ;).

As I mentioned, I'd love to see more variety ... and a better mix ... and simply MORE music.

Heck, if you notice the song quote at the end of all of my posts (sig area), you know what I mean about variety ... old and new!

Quick follow up to this thread since radio is "near and dear" to me:
Small town/local radio stations GET the idea of variety...new AND old.

During my recent quick road trip back'n'forth to St Louis MO, I forgot to take some CDs for the drive down ... and, of course, had to listen to the radio. If I rent, like I did that weekend (had a Dodge Charger), I usually take a few CDs ... just in case.

Listening to the radio back'n'forth to STL wasn't ALL bad, though it became quite obvious how "cookie cutter" some radio stations are. However ... as I've experienced during my road trips over the years ... radio stations that serve a small area or city/town KNOW how to play variety AND the songs you don't hear much anymore. I heard some awesome songs (both rock and country) that I have not heard in a LONG time. Now ... just imagine if ALL radio stations GOT it...!?
