I would call your doctor .... the first thing they gave me when I went in for my cath was a valium (samething).... But again, I would ask ... I'm sure they would rather dose you themselves.......

Yes, tell the person doing the procedure, they will give you that or Versed or something similiar to calm you.

thanks for the quik response .cant contact anyone now ! , will speak to doc or nurse prior to cath ,definitely wont take anything in the morning , but what do you think about bed time should i leave that one out as well to be on the safe side or would that of cleared the system by time of cath
thanx again Dean

Careful...that medication can be habit forming and hard to get off of.

I'm not a doctor, I'm a Chimp, but I think 5mg at bed time would be ok.....

I asked my anesthesiologist if I could take a xanax the night before my surgery (scheduled for 7 A.M.) and he said fine. I did so and when I went in the morning I specifically told them at what time I took what mg of xanax and there was no problem at all.

Good luck with your cath. Hope you get a good report.

I would think you are ok to take another tonight however, I would not take one in the morning before you go. They will most likely give you something there, but I would let them make that call.

I'm trying to understand why I was given only an antihistimine before my cath, especially since it was in my file that Alprazolam (Zanax) was one of my occasional medications. I would have thought someone would have put 2 and 2 together and figured a cath procedure might be a good time for the occasional anxiety sufferer to have some of his medication. It wasn't so bad in any case, but next time, I'll ask for something a bit stronger than benedryl.

It is possible that you will not receive any medication for your angiogram, I certainly didn't have any offered, no one did in St George's when I had mine and I was on a ward where everyone was there for the same thing.

I wasn't given anything for my cath last April but that was because they were doing an EP study as well and said they get better responses if there weren't any drugs on board. As soon as they finished the EP part, they gave me a good dose of fentanyl for the pain in my back. Every other time in the past, I was given valium.

I was on Xanax leading up to surgery. My cardio told me beforehand what meds I could or could not take the morning of my cath. He preferred I didn't take a Xanax in the morning because once in the cath lab I was given a cocktail of versed and demerol. Not enough to knock me out, just enough to make the country music they had playing tolerable (I prefer alternative rock). :D

The pre-op for my cath did not take long and I was in the cath lab less than an hour after I arrived. I also had mine early in the morning so I was still half asleep. That's why if I need some type of procedure done (cath, major dental work, colonoscopy, major heart surgery :D) I prefer to have it as early as possible so I don't have time to think about it much from the time I get up (assuming I was able to sleep) and the time they give me the happy juice.

The only med I was given before my last cath was Medrol because I react to the dye. Nothing was offered to calm me but I should have asked.

I admire you brave people. When they were bringing me to the cath lab, the nurse said they would be giving me a little something to calm me. I said "what's with the little business" and she laughed. They gave me enough for me to have little memory and to have felt no pain. Just the way I wanted it!
