Any thoughts about the effectiveness of antibiotic toothpaste in helping prevent a bacterial blood infection? One brand that comes to mind is Colgate Total...there may be others.

"What is Colgate Total toothpaste?

The unique formula of Colgate Total, containing fluoride and the antibacterial ingredient triclosan, is the only toothpaste approved by the FDA with clinically proven ingredients that help prevent gingivitis, plaque and cavities, as well as tartar and bad breath. And, because it also contains a unique, patented co-polymer, PVM/MA, it continues to be active between bushings."

Well this is interesting, but it doesn't help for those who have sensitive teeth - so I'm out.

Sure would like more information about this though. Just wondering if it does more harm than good when it comes to blood infections.

Listerine has a germicidal toothpaste here in the US. I'm sure there are others.

However, good oral care is usually sufficient. That usually means flossing at least once a day and at least three professional cleanings a year.

I would point out that there are beneficial bacteria in the mouth as well, and we may not be doing ourselves as great a favor as we think by trying to overpower nature with chemicals. She has a way of responding in kind.

Best wishes,

I just did a search on Colgate Total since I was intrigued by this thread. I found the following which corresponds with what Tobagotwo is worried about: "...The triclosan in Colgate Total is a bit controversial, since some experts say we're overusing antibiotics, preventing our natural antibodies from developing..."

I personally think you can end up with bad breath because of the triclosan. Imagine what happens in a place that's wet/dark/full of nutrients when you kill all of the bacteria that feed on fungi and other micro-organisms.

I shall try this colage once or twice a week and see what happens.

I go three/four times a year to the dentist, I floss once or twice a day, yet my gum continues to recede with time. One dentist recommended I wear something at night which is antibaterial...of course, it is costly, but did not fall for it. But, I do not mind trying the above Colage!
