I had an echo yesterday. It showed the aneurysm grew to 5.4. We did an MRI with contrast today to find out what's really going on. The doctor doesn't think it's really as big as the echo says...he says that the MRI is more accurate. I won't find out the results til morning. If it's gotten much bigger, we'll have to move up the date of the surgery, which I don't want to do. My blood pressure has gone up, and I'm having chest pains. Hopefully nothing is wrong. (Or at least, not any more wrong than it already was, lol.) I could use some prayers!

Thanks.

I hope the MRI shows a smaller one so you can keep your plans. Have they figured out what exactly is going on with your thumb and the other things you thought could be BE?

MRIs are definitely more accurate than echos; however, I assume you mean that they think your aneurysm grew during your pregnancy. If so, I'm not surprised. Pregnancy isn't easy on your heart. My cardiologist described the effects on my heart from pregnancy as a 9 month long moderately slow basketball game that never lets up. The harder it pumps, the more stress on your heart and your aneurysm.

I hope that they find out that you have a while to wait for surgery, but I wouldn't wait too long. Your babies need a mommy and the sooner you get this behind you, the sooner you'll be available to them.

Well, if your experiencing pain and have high blood pressure to boot, I have alarm bells going off inside my head. I hope that MRI is TODAY.

Lyn- They think the problem in my thumb is a blood clot as a result of the ART line they had in my thumb during my c-section (they had me all done up in preparation for an emergency aortic surgery, just in case). They said there's nothing to be done but wait for it to work itself out. They said there's no risk of it dislodging and going anywhere, because my thumb would be the end of the line.

Lisa- No, my aneurysm was stable during the pregnancy. They watched it very closely, and I had an echo right before and right after the c-section, and it was pretty much the same size both times. This would have happened just in the last three weeks, which is why they were concerned enough to do the MRI. They don't want me to wait long, but they do want to wait til I'm at least three months postpartum. If they do surgery on my now, so soon after the pregnancy, they said I'm at a higher risk of bleeding.

Ross- The pain isn't bad, but it does make me nervous, with my blood pressure going up. The doc thinks it could be the ibuprofen I've been taking that has put up my blood pressure. He took me off it (and the percocet...gee, thanks, doc!) and raised my labetalol to 125 mg. It's still high. But maybe it needs more time.

I've arrived late to this thread....it's amazing what happens when you're offline for a week! any updates on the results of the MRI? Thinking and praying for you,
Yolanda

The results of the MRI showed that the aneurysm had definitely grown. Not hugely, but it is worrisome. (I can't even remember now what they said the amount of growth was.) My surgery is a week from tomorrow. Time to start freaking out! ;-)

Don't freak out! I know, easier said then done, but your symptoms sound so similiar to mine just before it blew, that I'm actually dancing that your having your surgery soon!

Honestly, you don't ever want to find out what it's like to rupture, if you should live through it!

Time for you to start posting in the presurgery forum. ;)

Don't freak out - be relieved that it's so soon. (and then freak out - cuz that's okay too. ;)) Before I read your last post I was about to post "Get in there and get it done - everything else will have to wait."

Having been head of a Marfan group, I am worrying about you. Around here, they do heart surgery at 5.0 cm (where 20 years ago, due to the risks of surgery, they had to wait until 6.0.) Also, pregnancy loosens up your connective tissue, and I have talked to dozens of women whose aneurysms either dissected in the last weeks of pregnancy or in the first few months after birth. (Some women start exercising like crazy after childbirth, which also can make the aneurysm dissect.)

Please take care of yourself and the aneurysm!

Cheers,
Maryka

Basically, it is out of our hands once the numbers show it is time. I did back flips over all my numbers of my aneurysm, and how much it had grown, and margins of error, and echo vs. cat scan and then one day, Dr. Svennson's nurse wrote me that Dr. Svennson had reviewed my latest cat scan and "he would like to offer me surgery!" I had more than enough time to freak out, and then it all happened.

I'll tell you, the whole time before seems like such a long, long time ago. And looking back, the waiting was much more challenging than the actual surgery and recovery. If you've brought 6 kids into the world, you can do this. Just think of the wonderful day you are back home and can see your family again. It won't be long now until you make it to the other side of the mountain and we will all be here cheering you on!

I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts, Betsy

Don't delay surgery! I did, and my aorta dissected and had emergency surgery, ending up with a 10-20 minute margin on the right side.

Planned surgery is always enormously better than emergency, for you, and even more for your family.

I too had one of those doctors who said "that's not what is wrong with you" the tests made him eat some crow. I didn't go back to him after my TEE. I also tried to put off surgery until after Christmas, diagnosed in Sept. & surgery in Nov. Gustaf said it best "planned is better.." even if the time frame isn't ideal. God bless and you'll be in our prayers.

Keep sounding the Alarm gustaf. Mine did the same thing and I guarantee anyone here that they never ever want to experience anything like that.

Thanks everyone. I could use all the prayers I can get!

Maryka: Don't worry, I'm not exercising. I'm not lifting a finger!! I'm too afraid to. I don't care how fat I get. ;-) I can exercise later.

Gustav: No chance of me canceling surgery. I want this over with! Trying to be brave and not cry...especially when I get to the hospital. Docs always act like you're suicidal or need xanax everytime you shed a stinking tear. Sheesh!
