NASSAU (Reuters) - The teenage son of actor John Travolta died suddenly on Friday during a family vacation in the Bahamas, according to the family's lawyer.

Jett Travolta, 16, suffered a seizure at his family's vacation home at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel on Grand Bahama Island, attorney Michael Ossi said.

Attempts were made to revive him, but he died at the scene, Ossi said.

Jett, who had a history of seizures, was the eldest child of Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston. They also have a daughter, Ella Blue, who was born in 2000.

(CNN) -- The 16-year-old son of actor John Travolta died Friday morning after suffering a seizure while vacationing with his family in the Bahamas, Travolta's attorney told CNN.

"At this point, we know that John Travolta and Kelly Preston's only son, Jett, had a seizure at around 10 a.m. this morning," attorney Michael Ossi said. "All attempts to revive him were unsuccessful."

The cause of death is not known, Ossi said. An autopsy will be conducted Monday. His body will be transferred to Ocala, Florida, for burial, he said.

Jett's death "was completely out of the blue," he said. "John and Kelly are happy when their children are happy. This is the worst day of John's life."

The Travoltas also have a daughter, Ella, 8.

Bahamian police said a caretaker at the West End resort where the Travoltas were vacationing found the teenager unconcious in the bathroom. Jett Travolta was taken by ambulance to Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport and was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

Jett Travolta had a developmental disability that his parents, John Travolta and Kelly Preston, have linked to Kawasaki disease, an inflammatory disorder of the artery walls that most commonly occurs in young children and can lead to heart disease.

In 2001, John Travolta told CNN's Larry King that his son had a near brush with death related to the condition.

"I was obsessive about cleaning -- his space being clean, so we constantly had the carpets cleaned. And I think, between him, the fumes and walking around, maybe picking up pieces or something, he got what is rarely a thing to deal with, but it's Kawasaki syndrome," Travolta said of his then-2-year-old son. "It was that the immune system overreacts, because they have almost the equivalent of metallic chemical," Travolta said.

According to the American Heart Association, "About 80 percent of the people with Kawasaki disease are under age 5. Children over age 8 are rarely affected."

The causes of Kawasaki disease are unknown. Some scientists think it's caused by an infectious agent, such as a virus. Some studies have noted a link between the disease and carpet cleaning chemicals.

John Travolta gained fame in the 1970s, starring in the television series "Welcome Back, Kotter" and the movies "Saturday Night Fever" and "Grease." His career got a boost in 1994 with his second Best Actor Oscar nomination, for his role as a hit man in "Pulp Fiction."

Preston has numerous TV and movie credits, including a supporting role in 1996's "Jerry Maguire."

CNN's Valerie Streit contributed to this report.

Police have issued the following statement:

"At about 11:40 am on Friday 2.1.09, officers at the Central Detective Unit on Grand Bahama received information that Jett Travolta, 16 years, son of movie star John Travolta, fell ill while at Old Bahama Bay Resort in West End and is en route to the Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport via ambulance.

As a result of this report, a team of officers were dispatched to investigate.

They received information at the hospital that Travolta was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Information is that the deceased arrived on Grand Bahama on 30th December 2008, aboard a private aircraft, accompanied by his father and mother Kelly.

They were staying at Travolta's suite number at the Old Bahama Bay Resort. Further information is that Jett suffered from seizures. He was last seen on 1st January 2009 when he went to use the bathroom at their residence.

He was discovered in the bathroom in an unconscious state around 10:00am on Tuesday 2nd January 2009. Arrangements are being made to have an autopsy performed, in order to determine the exact cause of death."

In 1984 i went through a time with good friends son diagnosed

with kalasawki he was 3 then and 25 today, hard to make a

diagnosis on it ,but he had every symptom in Bina's discription

they did diagnose it as kalosawki and not sure,so many years gone by if

had any heart troubles ,coronary etc,but it was terrible his skin had

peeled and the sores in mouth were horrid. It is terrible to see a young

baby develope such a virus, reminded me of Rhuematic fever i had.

But in 84 thats what the Dr's had diagnosed this child with.

Sad for John Travolta and family on his sons death.

On our news it says that Jett had a seizure and he had also hit his head on the bath tub, which could be the cause of death but i could be wrong. Such sad news.

Such an awful & sad time for John & his family! I feel so sad for them & for the death of their son who died at such a tender age. How sad!

I also heard that he had fallen & hit his head on the bathtub which contributed to is death. I'm sure we'll learn the true cause of his death in due time.

Such a shame

Such a shame

I just can't get my mind around the passing of this young boy.

Here we share happiness on a daily basis, now we share the sorrow.

How sad it is. May God bless him and keep him.

Travolta's own tragety

Travolta's own tragety

I was surprised when I read this story; it is another reminder that personal tragedy can just as easily visit those with fame and fortune as ordinary folk. :(

www.travolta.com has beautiful pictures of this young man with his loving family. In a video from November in Paris, you can see Jett's fairly dependent on his family and his nanny to move around.

But what beautiful eyes and a loving smile on that young man's face! I pray his baby sister will compensate and survive this. I lost a younger brother, age 26, when I was in my 30s and it seems like something at the time you simply will not survive.

Tragedy visits all of us, now and again. This will age them and break them but I hope perhaps they will trust in seeing him again - I don't know what CofS teaches about any of that. It's all that kept me going after my brother's death, dreams of him in a sunlit place and hugs that he'd give me that I'd feel when I woke up.

This was so untimely, that's the hardest part.
