Last week my dog rescue buddy called me with the news that she was doing another "dog pound pick-up" and would I possibly be interested in a little 11 year old Maltese dog who had been dropped off by his owner.
(This breed can easily live 16-17 years)

I replied that, Sure, I could be interested, but most likely the dog would have some kind of temperament issues or health problem for his owner to dump him off like that. Chances are good he is a retired breeding dog...he has a tatoo.

So, 2 weeks ago the little guy was neutered, had dental cleaning and was ready to be adopted out. My friend assured me that he was not biting, not chasing cats, not barking, and seemed to be a genuinely super nice dog.

I've had so many large dogs over the years, and this was no Chocolate Labrador......but ten years ago I also had fostered a 14 yr old Bichon Frise and she was a darling. Anyway, I have been so lonely since my Cleo passed away, so this little Maltese came to us last week.

Hubby called him "Dug" and the dog is surprisingly smart and fitting in nicely.
Mitten, our princess cat still likes to puff up and act like the brat that she is, but Dug just ignores her and walks away.

An added bonus: we discovered that Dug is 100% trained to do his business on those puppy training pads.
HA, no multiple trips outdoors in rain, wind, blizzards, and freezing temps.
It looks like this little "pound pup" has a second chance in life.:)

Oh he's so sweet. Looks like a little furry angel! Welcome home Dug!

Ohhhh he is so cute Bina! I'm sure Dug will be very happy with you & I hope he lives for a very long time & gives you many years of happiness!

Merry Christmas!!! :)

How sweet he is! You can carry him around in your purse!

Home Depot and Lowes here in Austin used to allow you to bring your pets into the store while shopping. We were at Home Depot a couple weeks ago and now they don't allow pets anymore for customer safety. Guess too many people were bringing their dogs and turning Home Depot into Home Dump O. :p:p First time I took Chester on a leash, he had to go in the middle of lumber, I cleaned it up.

Dug is actually quite a solid little chunk of dog. Most Maltese are kind of thin and frail looking, not Dug.
It is hard not to coddle and pamper these little guys, but I know that it's not good for them, they can turn into real spoiled brats....if he sits beside me while watching TV, then I brush his hair and chat with him. He gets no food from the table, and I make sure that he does not go on my bed, only the sofa. My daughter has bought him a little doggie bed for Christmas and I'm making him a polar fleece coat. When it's done I will post a pic.
