On a quiet day indoors I have been poking through some old photos. On one of my last threads I had talked about getting a another camera lens. My wife, Barbara, happened to read some of your responses, and seconded the idea that I should shop for another lens. I think owe a special debt of thanks to Marguerite, and others who commented on that post. I am going to take my time, but am already shopping for a new lens.

As to poking through some old photos: There were some suggestions that I try some experiments with black and white photography. One of the nice things about digital photography is the ability to turn a previous color shot into a black and white image. I probably wouldn?t have tried this without your suggestions-but here is an example of an image that was a pretty average color photo-but, in my opinion, exceptional in black and white. This is a shoot I took in the Canadian Rockies. What do you think?

Well, thank goodness for Mrs. Claus!!

Okay I really love the drama of this black and white. But given the stature of the mountains, aren't they a little faint.

Does Mrs. Claus have Adobe Photoshop on her list, too? Or does she value time spent with her husband too much to allow him a deeper dive into this addictive hobby!!

It is always such a pleasure to see what you have to share on any given day.

Thank you!

Marguerite

Dennis...I agree that this photo is probably more interesting in B&W. When I look at it I try to evaluate it from the perspective of the Zone System...and from that standpoint it is really quite good, I think. I haven't done any B&W in a while. I agree that it is remarkable how we can switch to grey scale from color so easily today in the age of digital photography.

I have to agree with Bina. It does look a little spooky.
Personally I like to see our Canadian Rookies in color......cause its all that is going for them
I'm thinking this is a dynamite picture in color.

Freddie can get any picture she wants from me. Through the magic of software, here it is in it's original color.

An old favorite

An old favorite

Freddie--I LOVE the Canadian Rockies. I posted this a long time ago, but here is perhaps my favorite picture ever-taken just outside the town of Banff in Alberta Canada.

These are both exceptionally gorgeous photos, Dennis!! I can see why the second one is one of your favorites. You captured a wonderful spot on the planet.

Thanks for sharing!

Beauty being in the eye of the beholder, to my eye the color version is somewhat monochromatic....greens and greys....whereas the B&W version in more interesting because of the very many tones ranging from black to white.

*nods*

I agree with Jim. I really like the B&W version better. If the color version had more interesting color to it (i.e. leaves changing color), I might've liked the color version better. But, as it is ... B&W for me.

My sister loves to do B&W photography as well, and she has come up with some awesome B&W pics.

I love the B&W affect too Dennis, but I've got to say, I'm particularly dazzled by the color photos!

I've been editing some of my Alaskan pics to see how they look in B&W & will add them to my Alaskan album & share them w/the forum when I'm done editing.

Great pic Dennis
I have always loved photography and after my surgery in 2005 I got a little more serious. I have scored a seasonal job with the one of the largest high school marching bands in my state to do pics of them at competition and there trips to Disney and The St. Patricks Day Parade in NY NY. It is the most relaxing thing I have ever done. I have been published in a few newspapes and magazines. What type of camera are you using? If you ever make it to the Washington D.C. area and need a tour guide of the city or some of the historical sites around feel free to contact me. I hate the politicians but the city has some awe inspiring sights that love to be interpreted on film.

Both nice pictures and get a different feeling with each but

they are equally great. Thanks for sharing Dennis.

"Geckly" Thanks for the invitation. Our SIL is a Lt. Col. in the army, and may be moving the family to D.C. If that happens, we will be in your area for sure.

For the last year I have been using a Nikon D80 (just discovered, sadly, they are going to quit making them). But I am totally not a technical guy-I still have a lot to learn as far as the camera's capabilities.

I shoot Canon. I had a film slr so the lenses were already interchangable. So I bought a 40D and I run the rebel xsi as my back up. Took some awesome picsof the Rockies and Yellowstone last summer. I'll have to get them on my website so you can take a look.
